Right now I'm about 5'10", 130lbs. If I do SL 5x5 consistently and eat about 3-3.5kCal a day, can I gain 40lbs by next Feb?

Doable. Just use GOMAD.

From The Novice Effect:

We have a member here at WFAC who gained 55 pounds in 11 weeks. I shit you not. Zach Evetts started with us here in late August of 2009 and by November 12 when I weighed him and measured his bodyfat he had gained a total of 55 pounds of bodyweight and a little over 31 pounds of lean body mass (LBM). This calculates to a LBM gain of 2.84 pounds per week, approximately the rate of growth seen in young farm animals. Little baby pigs grow about this fast, and lots of people make money by raising baby pigs.

wow... I didn't know it was possible to gain nearly 3 lbs of lean muscle a week naturally for a consistent period.

To be clear, this was not just 3 pounds of pure muscle per week, but 3 pounds of muscle + ~2.5 pounds of fat per week. It also required serious dedication to GOMAD and taking maximal advantage of novice gains through a proper strength training routine.

It's a huge calorie excess regardless of where it ends up.

Caloric excess and weight gain do not automatically mean unhealthy. For example, the OP is pretty damn underweight at 5'10" and 130lbs. He could easily stand to gain 40lbs and will probably end up healthier in the end; 5'10" 170lbs is a very normal weight and could be extremely lean if he busts his ass at SL 5x5.

Like brikis said, caloric excess does not equal unhealthy. Obesity does. Although there is increased oxidative stress, it can 1) be countered by taking in proportional amounts of greens and veggies and 2) is not that big of a problem to begin with. Metabolism will always deal with oxidative stress. It's one of the rules of living - if you have a metabolism, you are subject to oxidation. I made sure to mention "if you're eating clean" because that dictates the amount of default metabolic oxidation.

Unfortunately I cannot do GOMAD because I am East Asian and we get destroyed by milk. Popping 3 lactase pills a day is not really something I'm looking forward to, either.

Thanks for the responses.

Well then... chicken fried steak, chili, pork chops you've got a whole world of protein to start consuming.

Milk is definitely the easiest though. Nobody sells whole milk around here, but I really should start knocking down more. My maintenance at 240 is about 4k calories which isn't too bad. Getting up to 5k is brutal. I was at 6k when I was gaining in Iraq, not fun.

It doesn't work like that for Asians. You have to lay off the rice and eat like an American if you want to gain weight. I was 5'10" 150lbs going into police training, 10months now I am at 170lbs. All 3 meals here in the academy are buffet style and I eat a shitload (less on rice though). 40lbs is a stretch, I think you should aim at around 155lbs. For asians 5'10" at 150~160lbs you still get to keep some agility. When you are going to 170lbs and beyond, you become a slow ass like me.

That sucks, but it just means you'll need to get your calories from elsewhere. GOMAD has lots of advantages, but it's not the only way to bulk. Start tracking what you eat on a site like fitday.com or thedailyplate.com, keep the caloric intake high, lift heavy, and you'll be fine.

Try making the milk into yoguart and eating that. If its too thick just put it in the blender with some oats and olive oil or flax oil etc and youve got yourself a very healthy meal that you can just drink.

I'm not personally looking to gain weight but after reading about GOMAD, can soy milk be substituted over whole milk for those that are lactose intolerant?
