Alright. when Gaim (The Instant messenger program) opens up, say you click on any username in your buddy list. When the new window opens up, this status bar for the buddy's name you've clicked on appears on top of whatever you open.

An example : here

Has anyone found a solution to this annoyance?

Yes, it's a problem with a stuck tooltip (GTK+ bug). I have that all the time. Reopen the buddy list, move your mouse a bit, and it disappears. I'm glad there are open source programs, but for god's sake, why can't they just use the native Windows interface? You may think Microsoft is dumb, but they sure know how to make bug-free programs and interfaces that are free of stupid quirks like this (even though their software has exploits). The reason I say bug-free is because ActiveX was by design, and it was a design flaw, not a bug. Before someone flames me to death for saying Microsoft makes bug-free programs, exploits!=bugs. Back on topic though, you wouldn't believe how much I take advantage of the smallest things of Windows's interface that the person trying to replicate it just forgot about. Annoying to say the least. Went on a little rant there...

I'd rather have a dozen silly display bugs than one large security bug.

Anyhow, GAIM is open source. GTK is open source. Fix the bug. Be a hero. The reason they use GTK is because it's portable. The windows crap isn't.

I use gaim on NetBSD/amd64 and on MicroSoft Windows XP Professional all the time, and have never encountered this bug.

And as far as gaim security problems go -- gaim has them all the time, what with all the various sloppily coded protocol libraries. Over the last several years that I've been using gaim, it's been the most frequently publically vulnerable program that I use.

OP: I have the same problem, but it goes away fairly quickly and it's not enough to bother me ever.

xtknight: Microsoft does not make bug-free software. Even ignoring exploits, there are tons of bugs in the programs. Do Microsoft programs have programs have less bugs than similar open source programs? Maybe. But they're being paid and the difference is not very significant. I don't think comparing GTK to native Windows is even fair since they serve such different purposes.

If I'm ever forced to use the official AOL AIM client, I use AIM Ad Hack.

Thyme: How does it go away? You mean by clicking on buddy list and moving the mouse around? That's still annoying..

It's just one small godamn bug. Why can't they fix it. And then it will be flawless.
