How is this any different in the base sense? Both were archaic practices driven by cleanliness in a time when bathin and hygene weren't prevelent among societies. Both were further driven by religious foolishness.

Both are useless in today's modern world with soap and water. Both are archaic and still religiousely driven.

Because the clitoris is basically an unformed penis whereas the foreskin is just some extra skin. Big difference between cutting off some otherwise useless flesh and a functioning sensory organ.

And circumcision for males is still recommended by doctors not for any religious purpose but for cleanliness purposes to cut down the risk of infection and/or disease.

Yeah, I really don't understand why they call it "circumcision". It is more akin to turning her into a eunuch.

I agree. The term is misleading. Getting your lips trimmed (I hear it is very popular now) would be closer to circumcision.

Noooooooooooooooonoooooo......

Umm...I probably can't comment further w/o getting smacked with the ban stick, so I'll leave it at that.

they are totally different you tool. foreskin is useless and its not big deal when it cut off. but cutting a woman clit off is a whole lot different. Sewing a womans lebia together is a whole lot different. cant you see that? and no they are not both religiousely driven, the female mutilation is done only to control the woman nothing more.

I believe the female version is because women aren't meant to feel pleasure during coitus and as a deterrent to them becoming loose women, not as a hygene measure.

I hatte this, hate this , really hate this.

How can some cultures be so superstitious to the point of absurdity!
He says shame to the family, firstly i hope he is feeling very dignified standing there in the court answering questions about mutilating a small child. , shame to the family, yeah rite!
secondly, who is going to know whether a girl is as he says it ""circumscribed"", was he planning to show her naked to all the neighbors? Lets see some one cut his penis and see how he takes it.

This is so dumb! I hate this. and in the between of all of this divorce battle, the only one who really suffers is the poor child.

Clitoridectomy
Clitoridectomy means the partial or total removal of the external part of the clitoris. It was sometimes practiced in English-speaking nations well after the first half of the Twentieth Century, ostensibly to stop masturbation. [12]. Blue Cross Blue Shield paid for clitoridectomies in the U.S.A. until May 18, 1977 [13]. Clitoridectomy is still being practiced in isolated instances. It is, however, quite common in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa, east-Africa, Egypt, Sudan, and the Arabian Peninsula.

Type II circumcision is more extensive than type I, meaning clitoridectomy and sometimes also removal of the labia minora.

Neurectomy, or severing of the pubic nerve to permanently numb the genitals and approximate the effect of a clitoridectomy was performed on institutionalized girls and women around the turn of the 20th Century in America and Australia, and electrical cauterization of the clitoris was reported to have been occasionally performed on mental patients in the USA to stop them from masturbating as recently as 1950.

The kind of things that sometimes happened to girls and women were documented in Alex Comfort's book, "The Anxiety Makers", Panther Edition, London, 1968:

About 1858, Dr Isaac Baker Brown, later president of the Medical Society of London, introduced the operation of clitoridectomy for the consequences of what he coyly calls 'peripheral excitement'. These, in his view, included epilepsy, hysteria and the convulsive disorders generally (page 109). In 1866 Brown published a series of 48 of such cases. This caused what Comfort called an 'almighty row'. Dr Baker Brown was ejected from the Obstetrical Society. Comfort says (page 111) that 'clitoridectomy fortunately disappeared from England'. However, it was taken up in the United States:

In 1894, we find Dr. Eyer of the St. John's Hospital, Ohio, dealing with nervousness and masturbation in a little girl by cauterizing the clitoris; this failing, a surgeon was called in to bury it with silver wire sutures - which the child tore and resumed the habit. The entire organ was then excised, with the crura. Six weeks after the operation the patient is reported as saying, 'You know there is nothing there now, so I could do nothing.' (Comfort, ibid, page 111)

Comfort says that this concern about masturbation 'did not really die out completely until the 1940s with the statistical studies of Kinsey' (Comfort, ibid, page 119)

Why are you people comparing it to cutting off a man's penis? She'll still be able to have children.

A man can have children without a penis. The penis is to transport semen, which is produced in the testicles. Matter of fact, some fertility clinics draw sperm directly from the sack, as opposed to giving you a cup and magazine.

<science>When babies are formed in the womb they all have the same kind of tissue between their legs. Males generate alot of testosterone around the genitals and the penis is formed. Females do not generate testosterone and a clitoris and vagina are formed instead.</science>

Even though the girl will still be able to have children, a MAJOR sensory organ has been removed for the rest of her life.

no person in the world should EVER mutilate the genitals of a child regardless of sex. it is the most barbaric thing one can imagine. Its sad the people still accept this horrible act as a routine thing to do to a male child in this day and age.

Then he needs to go back to Africa. He is in our country now. Cultural relativism doesn't apply here. He needs to adhere to our standards and laws.

Cutting foreskin is not mutiliation, you ignorant tool.

If I wasn't circumcised, I would be embarassed to let the guy out around women. I still have pleasure. I can still use it. It is by no means mutilated as the fundamental properties are still intact.

Yes, but it's not the same. Woman with no clitoris can still have sex, man without penis cannot. I am not saying that he should have done that, but you can't compare it to cutting off man's penis.

Sure. But you can do your best to instill values and make sure they aren't going on dates with various boys at age 16 by themselves.

Nurture > nature as far as this goes. Of all the girls I have met, the slutty ones were the ones with family problems: too strict rules, divorced parents with a trashy mom, molested, etc.

I'm hoping the best for my daughters, and if they want alone time with their boyfriend of 2 years, fine. But I'll be damned if my 16 y/o (in another 13 years) will be hopping into some car and "going to a movie. Be back in 3 hours."

It's still mutilation, just less so than removing woman's clitoris. What you are embarassed of is irrelevant.
