I like my G5...very good for video editing, I can defiantely tell a difference. Plus, Final Cut Pro owns every other editing software. Get the G5 if you're going to be doing some editing, otherwise get a PC.

"I am probably going to be selling my dual G4 1.25Ghz machine in the near future to get a dualie 2Ghz G5."

Why don't you just upgrade it?

It sounds like you plan on using mainstream apps. There's no way the g5 risc processor (even in dual configuration with 1ghz fsb) is going to be able to out do comparably equiped high end pcs for divx encoding, or even video editing. Photoshop is a different story.

get a pc.

What are you talking about.. the G5 excels at video editing with FCP and the MPEG2 compression rate is supposed to be insanely good.. There's also a G5 enhanced version of DIVX in the works (with 64bit processing, optimized for dual cpus as well)...

I don't have a g5, but I have a dual g4, and when it was released it was hyped for optimized editing in FCP with the "quartz" processor designed specifically for mpeg2 compression/realtime quicktime effects. In reality, apple is full of crap. My dually g4 1ghz(x2 obviously) is substantially slower than my p4 2.4 at rendering, encoding, and virtually everything aside from photoshop. For some reason my pc gets hung up when I'm working with huge files (maybe better implemented cache on mac?). So yeah, I'm extrapolating, and not paying attention to 64bit apps (obviously an exception), but in general apple's reporting of optomization has been less than accurate.

For the same reason that I can't stick an Athlon 64 in a Socket A board.

Tell us what you plan on using it for, and then we can tell you what to get. Athlon64 and G5 would both be good, but in different situations.

Completely different architecture and case design. Plus, dual G4s have a good resale value.

Funny, this PCMag review says just the opposite: It has the dual G5 faster than a dual Xeon 3 GHz for video encoding, but losing for Photoshop. :p See benches here. OTOH, the Ars tests have the G5 beating everything in Photoshop. The Opteron will win in games though.

Can't imagine why anybody would want to be led around by the nose like that.

Only go for the G5 if you can get that sweet 23" LCD monitor from Mac, too. After all, if you're going for the G5 what's another $1,999 for an excellent 23" monitor ??

hehe dude if you dont know anything,
save yourself from looking like an idiot and keep your mouth shut...

From the benchmarks, g5 came out slightly on top the fastest x86 thing out there.
So if you like unix and osx, i would definitely do it. Its fast and the OS is just amazing. Plus im willing to bet that develoipers will now releqase more games for mac, since its a very capable platform.
