This is beyond dumb. But if it makes you feel any better, I'm having issues logging into my account.

How is it dumb?

You kept sensitive personal data in an email account accessable from anywhere. That's mildly dumb. What really takes the cake is, this account that you kept this sensitive and personal data in is still in testing. Sorry, I agree with the self-appointed emperor....this is beyond dumb.

Dude, everyone makes mistakes. It was dumb, and I won't do it again. Now I just need to get it back somehow... this doesn't change the fact some sensitive documents/info has been/may have been compromised.

"You're dumb, what a dumb thing to do" may be true in this case, but it doesn't help the situation at all.

Thanks to those offering actual help/suggestions.

You want help/suggestions?

Next time, if you plan on keeping sensitive, personal data online....at least make an attempt at encrypting it. Also, never choose a password that's in a dictionary.

Edit: Jumpdrives are cheap and can hold quite a few text files....you can even get jumpdrives that have secure partitions on them.

You left unencrypted personal information, including a SSN and passwords (I'm guessing to other accounts online), on a website with possible questionable privacy concerns. Did you think it was pure genius?

So how stupid was your password? Since it's gone, post it.

Not genius, but it was convenient. The password was...

right.

In the land of the stupid convenience always wins over security. Die already instead of possibly polluting the gene pool.

Solution: Change the SSN. Change all passwords. Change all private information that may have been distributed through stupidity. Mail the help address.

I'm sure you've never made a mistake in your life. Get over yourself, kettle.

I've never posted someone else's SSN on the internet.

What did you do, e-mail yourself with the body message "<S.O's name>'s social security number: XXX-XX-XXXX"??? I would have e-mailed myself with just numbers so in an event where my account was hacked, the numbers would mean nothing.

I'd hate to say it but frankly, I'm not surprised.

I thought people were starting to get a clue about this stuff.

How does the SSN issue get resolved then? How do other people get it resolved when that information makes it to the general public?

[cable guy] The password is...."vagina" [/cable guy]

Sorry Dez, that sucks. Seeing how Gmail is in beta mode right now I'm sure they won't give you much help. And the people who just say "that was stupid you are an idiot" should just shut up. She already knows it was dumb and is trying to resolve the issue.

I hope it works out for you and your personal information/bills/credit/etc. don't get screwed with.

Love,

OUGH NOES!!!!

You try so hard to please your fiance and now he's going to dump you because you got his identity stolen. Such a shame.

:p

Honestly, I would wait a bit before automatically assuming that your account has been hacked. Gmail is still in beta, remember?

You cannot get a new Social Security number if:
"Your Social Security card is lost or stolen, but there is no evidence that someone is using your number."

i beleive that would apply here

I told him what happened, and of course he's loving and supportive as always. :) Like you, he reminded me Gmail's in beta too, so I guess we'll try and wait it out.

*fingers crossed*

Update... does this mean anything?

I sent an e-mail to my gmail account from my work account and included a read receipt. I also included a trace, which kicked back:

Your trace: Immediate Attention Required
addressed to: myaccount@gmail.com
has reached: MAIL.GLOBAL.BIGFISH.COM
at: 10/22/2004 04:26:28 PM

When I google-ed "MAIL.GLOBAL.BIGFISH.COM" the #1 result was:

http://admin.global.bigfish.com/
admin.global.bigfish.com

http://admin.global.bigfish.com/ = https://admin.global.frontbridge.com/

Does this mean anything at all?
