FYI.....you don't need a bank to be open to make a deposit

My old bank required a debit card to buzz in... actually I still have that debit card and that account is still open so I can probably still go inside. My current bank, I just open the door. There's not much you could do, the teller desks and all that are closed off, you can't get to them. There's cameras everywhere.

Must be a Canadian thing.

American banks clearly have no faith and trust in Americans. For good reason, I reckon. :(

This comment was made to me, inferring I was lying about my plans for the day.....

Are people really this stupid? Do not people live near banks that have ATM's? Apparently, I live in a ghetto and cesspool, and even the banks here have ATM's, and even ATM's that print out a copy of the check you've deposited.

So where do these dolts live that have banks with no ATM's?

Actually, there is an absolute ton of people that when they deposit their paychecks they don't put it into an account... they want it straight converted to cash.

I suspect why there are people saying such things to you.

Don't be naive, what kind of unsecured bank would just allow people to walk in and out of it by buzzing themselves in willy nilly just cause they have a debit card? That's the most ridiculous thing I've read in this entire thread.
Huh?

Let me explain. Just inside the door to the bank there is an ATM. It is in an enclosed area, a lobby area that is accessible through a door from outside with a debit card during non-business hours. You can't get into the bank proper because there is another door that is locked. Your debit card will only let you into the area with the ATM machine.

Oh, and there are cameras.

Takes longer than an ATM for the funds to clear.

I've got an app that does deposits, but doing it at the bank's ATM credits my account immediately, well, up to $500 for checks. Any remaining balance shows up the next day. The photo app takes a couple of days for any crediting of the check(s).

TBH ive never deposited anything at the ATM. i honestly think i make under 5 deposits a year

It's not like we make a ton of ATM deposits, but we do have one check every month coming in that has to be deposited.....mortgage payment on some land we sold. Buyers like writing a check vs. doing a bank-to-bank transfer to our account.

We really don't care because it doesn't cost us anything and their bank does charge them to do the transfer....they're cheap, too. So, we understand and I go every month to the ATM to stick the check in. No biggie.

I think it is or at least more common... all the ATMs I use here are drive up. When I was in ON they were in the "bank lobby" and you need to buzz yourself in.

my account clears anything under $1k immediately, and even then it will give me up to 1k of any check larger and then give me the rest when it clears which usually takes 1-3 days.

By "buzz in" do you mean swipe your debit card? That's pretty common around here.

OP said check

Nobody cares about your piddly ass deposits
No, Brandon, he was expounding on his argument. However, I would still like to take pics of my $$ and have it deposited...and still have the $$ in hand. Trust me, I would never spend it.:whiste:

I'm a cash business and my bank has started charging me for a cash deposit. Granted it's not much, .10/$100, but they don't want to handle my $$ when the fed's charging them 0% and they love electronic transactions.

And not that long ago, there was no such thing as free checking....

I work in the financial industry and we were open today but couldn't do much due to the bond markets being closed.

That said, it just now struck me that I went to my bank today for something and they were open.

I haven't stepped foot in a bank in ~ 7 years.

In that time maybe used an ATM 10 times, never once paid an ATM fee.

Deposit with phone, funds available instantly.

USAA for the win.

How does that work, do you have to use one of those matrix phones and it just sucks the money or check right through the handset? I think there's a feature on the DMS100 for that. I recall reading something about a matrix in the documentation.

Actually I've seen those apps where you can take a picture of a cheque, how do those work? What stops someone from photoshopping a cheque or doctoring it in some way, or making one up out of thin air using an account number they found somewhere? Cheques have various security features like cash does, to avoid forgery, but you need the physical one to confirm it's legit.

No you don't

Really? So I can take a picture of a cheque someone gave me, photoshop the amount to anything I want, or just make up a fake cheque and take a pic of it, and it will go through? I guess if forging a cheque from scratch you'd need a valid signature, but you can always use some kind of government cheque and just put any amount. Ex: tax refund cheque if it's not setup for auto deposit.

I imagine it would be a bit harder to double cash a cheque as it has a sequence number, but you can always photoshop that too and use high enough numbers so that it's never been used, but not sure if those numbers actually do mean anything.

So those hologram things and all that arn't required? I have seen cheques that are literally printed off a standard printer, but I always figured they used a special kind of paper or ink or something.

Wth time to find a bank that isn't bending you over?

Red Squirrel, in the U.S. where checks are still too popular, they don't have any security features. You can forge a check but you won't have access to the funds (above a small amount) until the check clears. There's a popular legend that you can hand write a check on a cocktail napkin as long as it meets 5 or so criteria.

They may clear, but if the person who owns that account number notices (and who wouldn't notice?) and files a complaint they have an electronic trail directly to you. Say hello to prison, as long as the jails aren't so crowded they still have room for check fraud.

like an hour longer, lol. I've never had one of my Chase photo deposits take more than an hour before it has been accepted and available in my account. c'mon man.
