Got the 512E from COMPUSA on Friday. Was reported as 512EB and had the 2.0B firmware already on it. I was wondering if EZCD from Adaptec supported burnproof or not.

Is this drive still supposed to be 149.99 at Compusa?? it is showing up as 199.99 on the website...anyone have a definite answer on this?

On the shelf of the COMPUSA store I went to last Wednesday (2/21/01), it showed up as $199 (as well as on the web site). when I went to the front counter for a "price check", it rang up @ 149.

perhaps if it is ringing up @ 149, it was a sale that is no longer.

The drive I got was burnproof, but if I flip that flag on in Nero, I can barely do anything else. Everything slows right down, even though I do get 12x recording. Anything I can try ? I have the 512EB as a slave with a Toshiba 12x DVD as the master.

Hi, How about try TEAC 512EB as Master and your DVD as slave. Yes, I read the manual that you should put the cdrw in slave when you have dvdrom. Well, at least it works for me. I have 30G HD in Primary Master and 7G HD in Primary slave, TEAC 512EB in Secondary Master and Asus 8X DVD in secondary slave. DMA is checked and burn proof, too. No slow down or whatever when burn by nero.
Oh,yes, $149 is last week's sale price.

To those who bought this drive..

Can anyone else use CDRWIN to burn BIN files on your Teac? All of a sudden, I can't anymore. Can't figure it out, either. All of my BIN&CUE files turn up as "CD" in Windows Explorer. It's odd, because other things work (such as Nero, EZ Coaster Creator, et cetera) but anything I try to burn with a BIN/CUE never works. (The bin/cue's work as I have tested and burned them with my old Yamaha 8824).. I've also tried Fireburner, but that doesn't offer burnproof so the burns always failed.. I've even tried many versions of CDRWIN, from 3.8C, 3.8D and 4.0Beta.. nothing..

For those with BurnProof slowdowns, make sure your drive is set up to use DMA. Mine wasn't. Once I did, wham, instant speed burst!

thanks, and for those who haven't -- go get this drive at this price!!

Hmmm, I am using TEAC 512EB with 2.0D firmware. NO problem burn .bin file by using cdrwin 4.0beta.

Well, you NEED to use cdrwin 3.8d or higher, because only those support the Teac drive. I think the older ones use generic stuff, which isn't as good. But I've had no problems. Make sure you have a good copy of cdrwin, because if "change" it in the wrong way, it will burn coasters.

uh oh. that 2.0D version of the firmware - the program seems to have frozen up upon clickin yes... this cant be good.

I updated to 2.0D Last night. No problems within Win98se.

I was holding my breath, hoping there wasnt a power brown out, (Calif).

Im not fond of Windows flash updates, but everything seems OK.

Just in case someone didnt read the "readme" -
Turn off any CD authoring software that might be in memory,
and disable Auto Insertion Notification on your Cd drives for the flash. It says the update may freeze if you dont.

I r stoopid. I tried to flash it in NT (when NT is not listed as a supported os)... no harm done to the drive - then went and flashed it win98.

for those who have listenning to Chien much read this. if you don't want to have a big heachache later so don't everer put your cdburner in master. reason is, if later your OS have problem than you want to reinstall in clean install than the problem begin. reason is most cdburner is ide not atapi devide. so cdrom will not bootup even your OEM windown in your cdburn. so dvdroom much be in master cos most of them are atapi device so it will bootup when you want to reinstall your OS .

Heh...my cdr is master, no problems there. I did notice something though, which I'll post. I guess the burner doesn't like DMA. I read it on the FAQ for the other cdrw drive they have on the teac site (not the same one, but I guess it applies all the same) and they said to turn DMA off if you get lockups, which I was getting. I had it hooked up to the ATA100 along with my HD, and that has DMA and everything. I simply switched it over to Secondary Master w/ DMA off and now it works no problems. Btw, my other cdrom and cdr are SCSI, so this is my only IDE cdrom device. I dunno how that works, but it definitely doesn't like the whole ATA100 thing, although it seemed to support it. Curiously, it locked up burning at 12x but burned fine at like 4x w/ the DMA. Wierd stuff...

Hi, I am just trying to help 🙁 I did have my TEAC CD-RW 512EB at Secondary Master and my DVDROM at slave. no lockup or whatsoever... Sorry, I don't try to reinstall my OS or something... I turn on DMA on both CDRW and DVD. I am using the notorious via chip (Abit KT7)+winME (yes, I am using via's notorious bus master driver!!). No single problem from the first day I got the drive... Well, in TDK's manual, it "DOSE" says: put the cdrw in MASTER or be the only drive in that channel!!! I just thought all cdrw should be similar!

PS:sorry, if this didn't solve your problem but I just provide my setting and opinion.
