got the bare drive from esbuy.com for 157.65 tax included. installed it, ran nero 5.0.3.8, tried to burn some stuff, but it gets to 6% or 7% completed, then stalls and says SCSI/IDE error and stops burning. can someone help me with this? would be greatly appreciated. thx.

I bought the TEAC 8x8x32 at compUSA for 79 after MIR...
Is this a good drive? Is it a Pacific Digital and what would that mean?
I know it doesn't have burnproof but was looking for an inexpensive drive anyway.

Thank you Sept1967,

got there 15 minutes before it closed and they had two left. Now they have one!

Mine is the EB as well but I haven't tested it yet. I'm downloading my anti-virus update as I speak.... 😉

That's a good no hassle price, perfect for my birthday present.

Thanks again.

trout

I've been getting the same error on and off trying to write different discs I'm gonna try to find out why..

Help!! I can't decide whether to get it from esbuy or Compusa.
It cost 162 at compusa with tax and the other is cheaper, I don't know if I can trust them. Any experiences. Is it definite that Compusa is burnproof? Thanks in advance

Thanks Sept.
Then the 8x8x32 (58E) Teac is an OK deal at $79 or should I take it back and get the 12x10x32 EB model with burnproof?

Mac

I'd say :buy it from compusa. For $6 more, you get retail box with software (adeptec EZCD which not too good,though),1 blank CD-r and 1 highspeed cd-rw disc. if you purchase online, you need to spend $10 for Nero, too (so, it is about $156).. well, no gurantee for getting 512EB model, though. BUT, HEY, you can also exchange the drive locally and give it a try again.. I think the chance is quite high... (many people already got burnproof model including me.. some got one with 2.0A firmware and some even got 2.0B furmware....)

Mine came with firmware 2.0B as well.

If it helps, the Compusa tag of mine had a date of 02/14/01.

Since I don't think they change the tags ever, then that probably means that Valentine's day was the first day these drives hit Compusa shelves. Good chance of being the latest 🙂

Also I had some problems recording at 12x with various programs last night. But it worked fine with the 10x CD-RW that came in the box.

I'll try again today with different brands of CDs and see if I still get the same errors (7% stall).

Lastly, it looks like they skipped on the design of this drive. Even 'I' could have designed something less boring than that.

yeah i have the latest firmware. i tried usin adaptec, then found out that it reads the drive as a cd rom drive rather than a recorder. go here to get the update so that adaptec will support this drive: http://www.teac.com/dsp/cdrw/512ebupd.html
still cant get nero to work...bummer, o well. drive still works like a charm. im happy. 🙂

Hmmm, I didn't get any problem since I got this drive... I even put 8x certificated disk (Verbatim) and burn it at 12x while surfing and decompressing files... Not coaster so far!! I am using Nero. Use the Nero!! it is the best premastering program I think...
BTW, check your ASPI status by using aspichk.exe.. this might be relevant...
get the aspichk.exe here :http://flexion.org/aspi/ and if you get reported missing files.. get the forceaspi from here:

Ok well since everyone seems to be getting the burnproof one I will pick one up at Compusa tomorrow...
Just wondering since I never installed a cd-writer if I can tell if it is burnproof when I open the box or must I install it first?
I am building my computer right now and I need other parts so it won't work for awhile and if I have to install it to find out I don't know if I should buy it

Thanks in advance

NO, You can't tell from the box.. just wish you are lucky 🙂 Kidding.. The chance should be very high.. I think just exchange it if it is not burnproof one.. (well, remember ask the return or exchange police for the store.. 15% restocking fee sucks..)

trout, I was able to get rid of the errors by putting the drive on it's own ide chan.. I took the drive that was sharing the channel off.

I have my IDE channels pretty crowded, but I put the 16x CD that came with it and it's writing fine.

Now, there is one thing that is bugging me. On the box outside it says 4MB cache, but the software is reporting only 3MB. Do I have a bum chip or is everybody else getting the same amount?

Yeah listing 3 is normal. There was a review on this drive, that brought up the same thing.

"Interestingly, our benchmark software detects only 2976 KB of buffer on the CD-W512E. Both Adaptec Easy CD Creator and CDSpeed99 report this figure. We asked TEAC about this; their response was that the CD-W512E has a 4096 KB buffer, but uses a portion (4096 - 2976 = 1120 KB) for "internal commands." TEAC confirmed that only 2976 KB is available for the burning software to use."

Mwave has the Teac CD-W512EB w/software for $145.00 plus shipping. In the details for the drive, it doesn't say anything about BurnProof but it does identify the drive as the 512EB. It should be the right one.

Greets,

I went to CompUSA in Tampa this morning (live in Florida). I was disappointed at first as I saw none of the drives out on display. They only had a TEAC 8x8x32 on the shelf. So I snagged an employee and they tried to look up the model number and failed. They looked under 'TEAC 12/10/32' and found they had 16 of them. Turns out they were in the 'warehouse'. About 10 minutes later the guy brings me out one.

As a previous poster said on my box the model number was listed as: CD-W512E. I was a little apprehensive.

When I got home and opened the box on the drive the model number is: CD-W512E-(then in bold letters) B-02.

Windows identifies the drive as a TEAC Model CD-W512EB. So I guess all is well. Mine came with the 2.0A firmware... so I'm going to go get the update. I'm also trying to find a discounted version of Nero. $70 bucks for a burner proggie seems a bit expensive.

I mostly play games and I use them more than I'll use my burner and I would scoff at paying 70 bucks for a game too. Maybe that's not a good analogy... oh well...

I've been in a deep sleep... so I don't have a burner. This sounds like a good deal, especially after reading the review. Which software is better for burning cd's(music,etc)... Nero or Adaptec? Any help in deciphering the differences would be greatly appreciated. Plainly put, am I better off getting the Teac from CompUSA(w/Adaptec) or from or ESBuy.com(Nero).
