FYI: CompUSA 12x10x32 TEAC $149 possible Burn-Proof Drive

Just picked up this drive at CompUSA for
$149 plus tax(no rebates needed).

Installed it, and loaded up NERO 5.0.2.8,
and is showed "Burn Proof" supported.

Threw in a CD to copy (test) and the Burn Proof checkbox
was checked, and the burn status show the CD was created
at 12x with Burn Proof.

If anyone can confirm, that would be great.
Cause its a killer drive for $149 , even without Burn proof.
This is the retail drive, w/ Easy Cd Creator 4,
and a 10x CDRW disk, and a 16x CDR disk.
Drive screws, and IDE cable also.

Does the drive end in "EB" If so you have a burn-proof version. The price is great. The best I have seen that drive is around $160 oem and the reviews show it to be very fast, espically the access times.

Give it a try!
Play Quake3 while burning, see if you got a coaster ;)

I remember hearing about this drive in another post. If the model number ends in "B" (e.g. CD-W512EB) then it has burn proof. The TEAC website does not mention it for this model though.

The toughest test for burn-proof is to run CPUMark99 benchmark while you burn. Almost all SCSI burners fail this test.

Yeah, Its a CD-W512EB drive Firmware 2.0B

There was nothing on the box about Burn Proof,
I guess it was dumb luck :)

Bought this at CompUSA yesterday. Box says its a W512E so no indication on the box that it's burnproof. However, I installed it in my wife's computer and the firmware says 2.0B. To verify that this is the W512EB with burnproof, I went to Teac's Japan site (the US site doesn't have any firmware listed for the W512EB) and noticed that firmware 2.0B (this is the latest firmware version) is only for the W512EB model. The W512E model's latest firmware is 1.0C. So we're happy campers now.

This is a killer deal for an excellent CDRW. The Teac holds its own against the Plextor 12x10x32 SCSI I have in my rig.

anyone know about the 8x8x32x Teac Drive? Does it support CloneCD ?

Hi,

1) Clone CD doesn't show the 8X8X32 model on its web page. I wonder if TEAC just rebadged someone else's drive or if it is just too new.

2) I bought one of the 12X10X32 drives today but won't have time to install until Friday so I plan on keeping it sealed in the box and deciding by then whether to keep it or not. If anyone else has experience on whether the ones being sold by CompUSA are burnproof...please post!

I tried the Japanese web site and interestingly there they show the model without the "B" on the end as burnproof and as the only model sold.

Hummmh.

The 8x8x32 that I saw (Pacific Digital Box/Teac Drive) only had 1 indicator light.

The 12x10x32 (w/ Burn Proof) TEAC has 2 indicator lights (in use/write)

On storagereview.com's site they confirm the "B" - Burnproof status:

"Please note that there is a CD-W512EB as well, which includes BURN-Proof technology. Our CD-W512E evaluation sample does not include any buffer underrun protection, but is otherwise, according to specs, identical to the CD-W512EB."

For sure its BP, as others have stated. Does CUSA have any $off$ offers?

Ok, confirm myself!! Just got it from CompUSA in Skokie,IL. The drive comes with firmware 2.0A and flash it to 2.0B. Here you go. It is burnproof!!!!!! :) Grab it while it last!!!!!!!!!!! Reported burnproof support under Nero 5.0.3.8,too. It can't be wrong!!

Man.. I just saw a review on these that said they were burn-proof, then I saw a vendor site that had them at a great price with no shipping!!
Hope I can find it - didn't bookmark it the first time.
Will post it when I see it..

Im surprised nobody has came up with a PM yet.

Doesnt any other vendor (with online coupons) carry TEAC drives :)
