My wife and I were looking at homes 2 years ago and we came upon this WONDERFUL home off of a golf course. The Realor explinaed what could and couldn't be in the back yard. We were OK with it. We understood that our back yard was an extension of the course.

At the signing table, the bring up the full disclosure of the HOA. Here are just a few of the reasons we stood up and walked away.

1. If your hose is not reeled up and secured in a hidden or wall mounted device when not being used it is a fine. If you turn the water off and run inside real quick to take care of something, it is a fine. etc...

2. You can only open your garage door to remove vehicles and riding lawnmowers. All other items must be transported through the side garage door. If you are pulling out of your drive way and drive away before the door has completely closed, you are fined.

3. You are required to apply fresh paint to the curb infront of your property as you see it fade. If the HOA pres see's fading and you have not repaired it within 24 hours, you get fined.

4. Couldn't attach a basket ball goal to your home or to a pole off of your driveway unless you fenced it off. If the Goal was visible, the net and paint had to be in repaired state.

5. Couldn't park your car on the driveway. Had to be in the garage.

6. Oil spots on the driveway left by visitors must be repaired within 24 hours of notice.

7. No UHauls to pick up or deliver anything. Must use a professional service to pickup and/or deliver.

All of this for only $430 a month... $5K+ a year!!!!

There is a big difference between keeping the home values up but there is also something to be said about being able to live and have fun. This was just a small blurb of many rules that were outrageous. Some were good like no parking on the street (I hate people that have 3 cars on the street but none in the garage or on the driveway.

unfortunately it takes nazi rules to make sure a neighborhood looks nice.

and you should have read the bylaws before signing the sales contract is it was probably stated in the contract.

Contract stated that the HOA laws will be made available at signing and that the bid contract could be canceled at that time.

in NYC the basic sales contract says the buyer read and understood the bylaws before signing the sales contract and forking over 10% of the sales price

The president of the HOA was my neighbor and I got home first so everyday on her way to her door I would be standing the butt ass naked in the front window and waved to her on the way to her house just about every day. Fines got lifted and they never gave me anymore crap about it.

What a hoot! Do you have any idea why that "inexpensive" place appears to be "nice"? Might that HOA you're bitching about, have something to do with that?
Inexpensive around here was just under 500k. If I wanted someplace without a HOA, I would be talking an older house in the really upscale neighborhoods that start at 800k.
You're missing the point, which is the fact that even though it's "moderately" priced, it's still "nice". IMO, credit for that goes to... THE HOA! :Q

My goodness I thought mine was bad least we could have cars in driveway till 10pm😛

Seriously

We have enough public tyranny between taxes, school boards, smoke bans, the list is infinite..

We have tyranny at work. Boss's rule period.

No way I'm electing tyranny when I get home and paying for that privalige.

As far as these dipsh1ts talking about cars on blocks, painted lucca green homes etc.. it simply does'nt happen when you get into 200K-300K+ homes (price depends on area) Typically when someone OWNS a home they keep it up as they relise it's an investment. Rentals OTOH turn into a nightmare. I've had a one that's it. A 200K-300K+ home is never really rented and if it is, it's w/ a complete background investgation to insure billy bobs not moving in.

Quite simply the argument is bunk. Nice homes, HOA or not , stay nice. Cheap homes, which lend themsevles to rentals and/or lower income, become crappy over time HOA or not.

True, but my neighborhood is full of moderately priced ($150k-$250k) houses and none of that crap goes on. There are no houses painted bright pink, there are no cars on cinderblocks, and there are no chickens being raised in the front yard.

If people want to surrender their rights, so be it. But when you do get screwed by a HOA, don't come crying here, because all you'll get is "I told you so".

Well, it seem to be portrayed as if you don't have an HOA this is what you'll get. Certainly not true, but there are plenty of cases where people have wound up with bad neighbors who affected their home values. The best example in the OC was from HB a few years ago, still a funny
story. See truth is, some people are just nuts.

Bill

p.s. PrinceofWands, serious question(s). How old are you and do you own a home?

you edited this post but my parents as a 1/2 million dollar home where gold flake and bright red became prominent, not to mention all the portible basket ball hoops......

at every income level there are hicks and trailer trash, some just trying to exercise the point of 'oh gee I make 6 figures a year, why do they hate me for painting just my house bright green with purple trim?'

Whoa, way to try and derail the thread w/flamebait!

SOME rules in HOAs are good: I.E. "There will be no cars on cinderblocks, period." Others are ridiculous, like TheGameis21 posted right above you.

wasn't a flame bait...
and i agree, some HOA rules can be ridiculous.........but not all HOA's have ridiculous rules
mine doesn't

i live in a great neighborhood
there's no absurd rules, there's no nazi rules
they mow the lawn, shovel the snow, maintain the exterior of the building
i pay them 75 bucks a month
well worth it in my opinion

however if they had rules similar to what people are posting here, i'd be living elsewhere
my point is not ALL HOA's are the same

Live it up guys, you may like your HOA now, but when you get bent over and screwed with no lube by them, I think you'll change your tune.

you live in PA, post you exact location idiot

1) chickens dont do well there, pigs too.

2) in your 'neighborhood' cars left on cinder blocks may beyond the norm

nice to think at an elitist although I think you have complained about those'people'.

Glenside, it's just outside Philadelphia. And yes, Chickens do do well here.

And I don't know what you're going for with your last sentence.

True. there are exceptions (I don't call a 300K HH home "upscale" but anyway) however simple code enforcement should have stopped all these issues. Seems OC governemnt failed her neighbors here not not having a HOA.

Lemme make one thing clear, I understand HOA is an added insurnace, which ultimatly boils down to individual choice. I don't begrude this choice, and understand it pluses and minuses. It's just not my cup of tea. Just like for some the risk of a hellion moving next door is'nt thier deal so they opt for HOA.

Was that last part really needed? Are you just trying to get a vacation to go with your vacation this week?

Now now, you don't want to hurt alky's feelings.

Seriously though, how do you have the gall to tell me what can and can't be raised here? I have a friend who raises chickens. Not in their front yard and there have been no complaints from the neighbors. Oh but wait, according to you chickens can't be raised in Pennsylvania. Oops, I'll have to remember that.

What next? Mushrooms and grapes can't be grown either?

Next time, I suggest you keep your ignorance to yourself before you go off and look like a complete jackass.

That was the court ordered sale value in 01, I'd have to pull comps but I'm guessing that neighborhood is in the 700-800k range now.

True, but it wouldn't have taken 15 years (IMHO) with an HOA.

Agreed.

Cheers,

Hmm... I think my family couldn't live in a HOA. I can see how it would be good (we have a neighbor who acts like it), but also bad. My family just couldn't. We don't have cars on cinderblocks... but we have 3 cars in our backyard being stored, secluded by a privacy fence and some trees. I don't think anyone would like us ther.

I was talking of *cheers, bill* 's neighborhood, check out the car post he posted in with just a non-direct link to his 'fortune'.

he obviously knows and has posted as such that chickens would not be raised where HE lives. I forgot in private you two are lovers though, sorry...you and *Cheers, Bill* can share the mushroom and grapes in private.

[edit] oh wait he now corrected it to a 2001 figure and now it being pretty close to at least 3/4 a million now....not to many 'chicken farmers' growing at home at that price.

retard.

You were warned and you chose to ignore the warning. Goodbye!

I guess I need some clarfication since you are intent on going on a which hunt. The neighborhood that story is about isn't where I live (I used to live in OC, but not in HH). Just thought it was a good counter argument that all neighbors (regardless of HOA's) are good, that lady (google her name for many more stories on her) was about as much of a nightmare as you could get.

MANUFACTURED HOME!?!?

OMFG, PLEASE tell me nobody here lives in a manufactured home!

Great. They got their house built, but it only cost them most of their life savings. And many of their neighbors won't speak to them because somehow it's my parents' fault that all the covenants were ruled unenforceable.

I wonder why the HOA didn't appeal? The judge went over the line a little there, you can't arbitrarily void terms in signed contracts.

CC&Rs *have* gone to court before, and the law has always upheld them. It's a contract. You sign it, not under coercion, it's binding. This particular judge must have had a problem with HOAs before in the past, but HE exceeded his authority, so an appeal would have overturned his decision.

Your land is yours, it's like your own little nation. You are lord of your manor. King of your castle. You are absolute within your borders.

'Your own little nation'? And what do you get with that? 'King of your castle'!? How tacky! As if you were somehow aloof from society and the world around you when at home! I bet you even run around the house naked, too, don't you! How crass!

Clearly some of you have made wiser investment choices than I... like that '32 Chevy that needs a little body work you have half covered up over there or that gallon bucket of paint you got, who cares what color it is, was only $5! 😉

I kid, but, for some of you who have those folks as neighbors, not so funny.

See, that's what I meant by my 'hicks' comment.

I seriously think a lot of the posters in this thread I really WOULDN'T want living in my neighborhood. Dunno bout the rest of you, but property IS an investment to me. I don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to just throw around without care. I put that much money into something, it had BETTER go up in value, NOT down.

Wow - ever hear of the term "elitest prick"? I think it aptly describes you 😉

dderidex, i hope you caught the part where kranky said the HOA originally approved his family's plan of erecting a manufactured home in the neighborhood. it was absolutely horrendous that the HOA tried to reverse their decision AFTER the house had been purchased assuming the family had the HOA's approval.

i'm guessing you did catch that but your remarks imply that you're a fvcking prick. the family was unfairly treated and the HOA should be held accountable for his family's legal fees.

for example,

So utterly bottom-of-the-low-class! You have *no* idea what those attrocities due to surrounding property value. How many people here enjoy losing 10s of thousands of dollars a year? Gods, they should be banned EVERYWHERE.

what the fvck is the point of this comment you douche? the low-class comment is infuriating. again, the point is, the hoa originally approved of kranky's family's plan.

the rest of your remarks are fine.
