During my vacation, I've been loading my pictures from my D70 onto my 80GB SimpleTech hard drive. There were about ~500 pictures on it. Took it home today, plugged it in, and nothing. Device Manager sees the device, says there's no problem, as does "Safely Remove Hardware," but GetBackData doesn't see it, nor does My Computer. Plugging it in a Mac does pretty much the same thing.

I guess the only thing left to do is remove the HD from the enclosure? If I lose these pics, I'd be VERY upset.

BTW, does that mean hard drive damage can occur if the drive is bouncing around (say in a backpack) while it's not on?

i think so. it has moving parts inside, like the read/ write heads. they may have been damaged or damaged the platters possibly.

Put in a ziploc bag in the freezer for an hour or so then take out and try right away.

Works from what I've heard a few times.

Shouldn't matter from what I've read.

I was gopnna suggest the freezer trick, but I have never done it myself so I have no personal experience with it.

Are you getting power to the device? Maybe you should open it up and see if you there is a problem with the connection inside the enclosure.

I have a program called Handy Recovery that worked for me in a similar situation. Do that before you put it in a freezer.

This is why I copy all of our vacation photos to both my laptop and my wife's and leave as many on our 7 GB worth of CF cards as I can.

I do. I even connected a seperate power plug to it, even though it usually only requires from the USB bus. Now my computer pretty much locks up whenever I connect it .

I would do the freezer trick then. A few times in the past when I've had my computer lock up because of a hard drive the freezer trick worked.

I think the drive enclousure is just dead. I just plugged it in and nothing happens. Usually, a red light turns on the device, and a blue light if power is connected. Now it does nothing. I guess I should open it up and plug it in directly.

Damn it, that menas I gotta buy a 2.5" to 3.5" converter.

I have a trick I have used many times with great success.
Put the HDD as Slave in another system with the same OS.
Even though the old HDD is bad, usually you can at least open it to get your folders open and Copy & Paste, "Move These Files", or whatever.
It has always worked for me except on one drive that had a bad board.

Also if you have a Fry's near you, you should be able to find a 2.5 to 3.5 converter pretty easily.

No Fry's near me, but I work at Best Buy, and CompUSA is next door, so I'm sure I'll find something if it comes to it. It's actually my moms drive, and she doesn't want me opening it because of the warranty. Any suggestions? I can always just grab another enclosure, but those things are at least $30, right?

No luck from the freezer trick. Hard drive still doesn't turn on. I found a few enclosures at Newegg for less then $10, so I think I'll open it, get an adapter, and just hope for the best.

You should have got the adapter before you tried the freezer trick. It's a one-time shot, and the drive is probably dead for sure now.

Your mom is retarded. Will opening it even void the warranty? Is there a tamper-proof sticker on it or something? Regardless, if she sends it in for warranty service you probably won't be getting the pictures or anything else off it. What's more important to her, the data on the drive or the $30-100 she'll save by using the warranty?

It sounds like the enclosure is dead, so nothing you do with the drive in that enclosure will work. You have two options - take the drive out of the enclosure, or say bye bye to your pictures.

There's no way to open it without prying it open, since there are no screws. She doesn't have much money, and can't spend $100, especially since this was a bday gift she never intended to spend money on.
