AC went out last night about 9 PM. 103 yesterday. Already 80 in the house now and supposed to be 106 today. We keep it about 72.
Repair people supposed to be here between 1 and 3.
Better go down to the basement where it's cooler.

Did you open up the panel on the outside unit to check if it's the capacitor? If so, do you have a Grainger near by?

I have 3 going right now.

It's still under warranty so I'll sweat till they some out. But I have the front door open so there is no chance I'll miss them.

keep lots of windows open at night, close all the external (must be external or it won't work) shutters when it begins to get hot outside or to shine on them.
I do this and it works pretty well.
Everything must be sealed to keep cool air in.

Of course I do this in a european house (0.5 m thick stone walls, not cardboard) and not with 40°C outside, just 32°, so YKMV (your kilometrage may vary).

But I see you already let the air in.
If the air can come in, the internal temperature will reach the external one.

Consider a backup unit or a chiller.

Romantic weekend at a local hotel may help

Huge temperature variation between inland and coastal areas. It's been mid 60's overcast around the beaches the past few days. When it's sunny, it's around mid 70's.

I can't believe you are all falling for this. This is just an excuse to lure guests into his basement.

Olds: Yeah A/C broke.
Guest: Again?
Olds: Yeah it's cooler in the basement though.

It was the run capacitor. Already cooling down in the house.
I am in Northern CA, near Sacramento.

oldsmoboat you deserve it. Try spending a week in a house with no electricity after a hurricane.
