I used to like AMD gpus, I'm not that active in gaming any more though.

Lately I come across more and more news that AMD's GPU business is not sustainable, and they can't compete anymore.

What do the enthusiasts think? Would you buy a AMD gpu now? Is it possible that they don't have a future?

not a big factor but..
obviously lately driver feature updates are important and people use the gpu for a few years. They may not be inclined to buy a certain brand if they think they wont be in the business for long. Not a big factor but its there.

I read the reviews of 7000 series. They are lagging on the feature side but I don't think it is as bad as the Pcgamer article claims.

Before listening to meme Nvidia shill articles, you may want to simply look at literally any benchmark results and see if they do not compete?

PC Gamer is owned by our Anandtech corpo overlords; Future. Considering the sus timing and content of the 14900KS review on our front page, along with this article from a sister site, I think AMD must not be spending enough ad revenue with Future. Or the competition is spending more.

I didn't vote in the poll because neither choice is my answer. I would vote for - AMD will continue to do what they have been doing for many years now. I.E. release new GPUs. Sometimes they have a high end offering, sometimes they don't. And we went through all of this with the CPU side already. AMD will bite down on the mouthpiece and keep swinging.

I'm pretty confident AMD can figure out how to waste more area on an optical flow accelerator, bigger ray tracing accelerators, and more 8 bit matrix multipliers.

But they'll do it for semi-custom customers first and then PC gamers will get the hand-me-downs.

Your response to my comment is a load of unsubstantiated fluff. One may as well assert with just as much substance that nvidia won't be in the GPU business soon because their AI division is taking off so everyone should stop buying Nvidia GPUs because they won't be supporting them for long.

Big-name manufacturers like Nvidia, Intel, Apple and AMD have gone through had patches for one reason or another. They're still here. So AMD GPU sales are allegedly down. So what? If it's true then it simply means that AMD needs to bang the marketing drum if they want to take market share from Nvidia. They've got a competitive product, they just need to sell it.

It certainly seemed like you were walking in with the same opinion as the article you mentioned. To answer your original question more thoroughly, if AMD had say three or four generations of GPUs that were seriously problematic (e.g. they couldn't hold a candle to their competitors) and Intel took most of AMD's marketshare and not any of nvidia's, then maybe it would be a reasonable belief that AMD isn't going to be in the discrete GPU market for much longer.

AFAIK both the x86 and PC GPU market shares have been pretty static for quite a few years now:

I think they will continue to compete, and will do fine overall. I would consider both Radeon and Geforce offerings, but I generally like high end cards, but at the same time I like bang for buck, and don't really care about RT. So something like the 7900 series makes sense to me. I also DO NOT like the new 16 pin melty connector, which is probably the main reason I never got an RTX 4090 and never will.

I have said this before and will say it again, I sincerely hope that Nvidia will go back to 8 pin power connectors for their high end Geforce cards. The upcoming RTX 5090 will probably be a great card, but I hope they have 8 pin options. Though realistically I should just keep my 7900XTX for a while before upgrading, I should be good for a while.

Steam survey should be called the steaming pile survey. You have to not only be asked, but also opt in. Then there is the problem with everyone logging into the same machine with their own accounts at cafes. Next there are people that don't use Steam. Or if they have it installed, rarely fire it up. I have a friend that only plays WoW when he has time to game. Another that almost only plays fortnite and Overwatch 2. It's like a bad joke that so many put so much stock in it despite all the glaring issues with it. I have read that if you don't disable the IGP on Zen4 it submits that instead of the installed GPU, anyone have feedback on that?

Also the FUD machine is running off the "48% worse YoY", but last year was a new gen year. XTX/XTs were out.
This year, AMD has released nothing since the 7800 xt, while NV has released the 4070-80 refresh.

It is not surprising that sales are down a lot, AMD's not selling anything much, and I suspect they want to dump as much inventory as possible before RDNA 4 rolls out. Prices may get cut further and income go lower next quarter, and it still won't have much of any meaning. If RDNA 4 somehow ends up a bust during its first two quarters, then these clickbait shill pieces may start having a point.

I have no issue buying AMD GPUs, my problem is the pricing of the entire market.

I'm just not going to spend the kind of money that is being asked for cutting edge parts. I am essentially going all used from here on out.

My old 980Ti was $330 all in used back in 2016. My 6800XT that replaced it was $430 all in used in 2022. At this cadence I might be looking at whoever can give me the most used GPU for my money out in 2028 sometime.

But these clown car prices have totally lost my interest in anything new.

Daniel-San has an okay vid that touches on the topic. His poll results reflect every other I've seen i.e. just over 1 in 3 respondents uses AMD as their primary. Retail alone is enough to justify continuing to make dGPUs. But it isn't like they don't have prebuilts using their cards as well. Yeah, they have almost no presence in the mobile dGPU market but their APUs are gaining momentum. As my kid says "It'll buff"

What is the problem? So AMD doesn't have a flagship that competes with 4090 but can complete up to 4070 Super and Ti? AMD cannot subsidize it's GPU prices and throw co-marketing money around using the massive profits from AI and ML processing that NVIDIA is obviously doing in the past two years.

Something has gone wrong clearly with RDNA3 but just looking at the spec you can tell that AMD was aiming big. (384-bit, transistor count/die size, TDP, etc.) Whatever AMD say about their future plans, I do not believe they will give up on high-end GPUs. It is too lucrative a business.
