Isn't LCD better than plasma?

I thought plasma was not the better technology any longer?

The quality of upscaling DVD players is BS; power conditioners are snake oil.

If you really want to make a plasma shine - what you need is a proper scaler. There are a number about - but if you are spending good money on a TV, then you really, really want a crystalio

Er, first off, scaler for what? The DVD player? The fact is that I hope in a year from now that the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD conflict will be solved, and then they can upgrade to either one who prevails, making a scaler unnecessary. The DVD player is to hold them over for the next year.

Plasma is number 1 in HDTV (if price isn't a concern), but the new LCDs may knock plasmas out of the market if they perform the way they are promising and the price is competitive with plasmas. I'm eyeing the 82". I just hope that thing isn't like $50,000 when it's released. :(

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. LCD's are not very large though.

That would just be mean. It's pretty common knowledge that BB has a huge markup on accessories, and service plans are almost pure profit. I don't fault him for getting the plan, and the people actually spending the money took the bait on the power conditioner. He already explained why he got the cables there instead of ordering online.

Unless you're willing to fly to his area and let them use your BB discount, it's a bit rude to flaunt that you can get a better price because you work there.

Exactly. The power conditioner was bought against my advice, and the cables were needed by Monday, so I didn't really have a choice. $40 for a 15' DVI cable isn't THAT crazy, either.

Plus by the time 10 years rolls around - you've spent enough on DLP bulbs to purchase a brand new plasma.

DLP bulbs have lifespan of around 60-80k hours, which is as long as the halflife of PlasmaTV's.

Newer ones have 60K hour phosphor half life. Thats around 6.5 years at 24/7 usage. Older ones are at 30K hour halflife.

The entire field of OLEDs suffered from the hype. Since starting grad school in EE and taking classes that are directly related to existing and upcoming display technologies, I have realized how much BS is flung at consumers. I'm sticking with CRTs for the time being :)

Why? If you had taken the time to read the OP, you would know that I'm 16.

If you don't mind me asking, is your family friend loaded? Also, good luck with your job prospects at BB. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

They're not loaded in the sense that they have millions lying around, but they're well off. The husband is a psychologist, and his wife is a chemist at Dupont.

I used to say stuff like this to people when I worked at a BB. Not because I was that ignorant, but because after 8 hours of being there, being volun-told that I was closing, and dealing with a customer buying the cheapest thing in my area but asking 100 questions about the stuff 10 times more expensive, and looking like 100 more were on the way I needed something to cheer me up.

I didn't do it often, once or twice a month I would guess.

I would be happier to live with my 15 year old 27" TV and lower my house mortgage by 11K. But, people like you friend are the people that keeping America economy going.

$550 on a power conditioner? Hell, for that price he could have bought a full blown UPS that could have kept the TV running for 30 minutes during a power outage. Why did you let your "family friend" get ripped off like that?

Once someone makes up their mind, there isn't much you can do about it. Just like how he's convinced Bose is the best...

Power conditioner and UPS are 2 completely different things. BPT is a well known power conditioning company. Or if you're really hardcore, you can get a power regenerator by PS Audio.
