I had to say the Ram, but that's mainly because of the Cummins. As far as the Titan's concerned, it has the same rear end as my mom's '90 Jeep Cherokee. I'd perfer the Dana 80-90's that are in my Dad and Brother in Law's Rams. The last thing you want is your rear end going out while coming off of the Sierra Nevadas.

My friend's Dad bought a Dodge 3500 Cummins and it's been in the shop twice already. Once because it died on him and left him stranded on the freeway and then immediately after getting it out of the shop (they had it for about a week) it wouldn't go over 50mph on the freeway. I haven't heard anything since but we will be driving it out to Blythe in a couple weeks for some bird hunting.

It's always possible to get a lemon .. but on average, the Cummins is one tough motor. The Ford Powerstroke is a close 2nd in my book with the GM Duramax in a distant 3rd.

The Duramax has had some MAJOR issues with it's fuel injectors.

IMO, the F-150 is a worthless piece of metal. The only Fords worth getting are the Super Duties.

While I do not have exact figures for Ford full size pickups vs. other makes, all the ford cars my family has owned have been riddled with problems in comparison to GM, Toyota, and Mazda cars we have also owned. A lot of people I know in this area (SC) drive all kinds of full size pickups from all makes. The only people I have heard complain about problems are people with Fords.

While I understand this is all anecdotal evidence...it still makes me leary of buying a Ford. I realize there is no guarantee no mater what brand I geat...and maybe after more research I will find the Ford full size pickups are actually quite reliable...that has just not been my impression.

The Titan is actually quite spacious. I believe it actually has the most space in class.

Maybe in the cab, not in the bed.

I agree, the HEMI was quite an engine...but when I drove one I was not impressed witih the how the truck rode and was unimpressed with the interior. I am curious to see how the new F150 and Titan ride.

correct. I meant in the cab. I know they do not offer some of the longer 8' beds that other manuf. offer. I do not need that long a bed though. The standard bed (for the extended cab) is 6'7"...which is plenty long for me.

I have a 2003 F-150 I purchased new in April 2003. To date I have not had it in the shop for anything other than routine oil changes. It has been rock solid and problem free.

OK. My views on the 6'7" bed do not align with yours, that is all. To me a standard bed is an 8 ft. box. This is a truck, it is meant for hauling. Anything smaller, IMO, is a suburbanized (meaning bastardized for the city) vehicle that has sprung up so that it can fit into a "standard" sized garage.

If you want an everyday driver that will occasionally haul, go foreign (I am not impressed at all with the way a "half ton" Tundra handles when loaded at maximum payload, in fact it is a joke).

If you want a truck to consistently haul payloads near full capacity, go domestic. I personally won't touch a Chrysler product.

I personally think Chevy is the way to go, but I'm really a Ford man.

I don't see too much of a problem with any of the American trucks. The MAJOR gripe I have on most cars and trucks is shoddy interiors. They always put these crappy materials in there that start to fall apart after 5 years. When I buy a truck, I want things to last. My experience is that Ford hasn't paid enough attention to quality in the last 10 years. Whether or not 2003-2004s are better than the rest, I don't know. So my vote is Z71, but you'll have to test drive and see how the materials match up. As far as your engines go, they're all about the same. I've never seen a full-sized pickup truck not be able to haul the stuff I need it to haul.

Noted. I do not use a truck for work. I also do not have some of the weekend hobbies that require people to need a 8' bed. I do need space to load things...but 6'7" is enough for me. That extra foot and a half would be wasted.

I do enough things that do require something more than a daily driver w/bed.

Anyway, a GM truck might be in my future, but I want to go and test drive some of these other trucks to see how they stack up before making that kind of plunge.

Wow, that's great for you. But guess what, most people DO want the smaller "suburbanized" models (I base this on model sales, the short bed trucks sell WAAAY more than the longbed trucks).

The OP didn't really say what he wanted to haul with his truck but I'm assuming, since he didn't say and since he is considering the Tacoma, that he doesn't really need a fullsized truck. I agree with you though. He should go foreign and get the Tundra Double Cab. Can't go wrong with that one.

My friend's dad has been a Dodge guy forever and recently test drove a Titan. He now has a Titan in the driveway.
I think that says a lot :D

Best all-round truck would have to be the GMC/Chevy.

Have worked on just about all of them, not the new nissan yet, and the GMC / Chevy seem to be in the top 1 or 2 spot IMO. One truck might be better at one thing, but overall GMC / Chevy wins.

And that does not include that GMC / Chevy has the best price right now.

Dodge is due for a makeover, Chevrolet is fine, I'd consider a Tundra in a few years after the production kinks are ironed out & they add some options.

I have an 03 F150, 0 problems, hasn't missed a beat. Just put a cold air intake on it, gave a small perk on the bottom end, & more intake noise...

Lee - what? The Dodge had a makeover in 2003. The Chevy has been running the same old truck design for like 5-6 years now. Chevy has the most to lose considering everyone (including Toyota) will have had a new truck design within 2 years.

BTW - you still want to head up to the DFW gun range? I've been itching to shoot the sh!t out of something :)

Whoops, forgot about the Dodge makeover. I really try to ignore Chrysler products.

Tied up this weekend, maybe next weekend?

Next weekend I have a wedding in the evening to attend - if it's during the morning, I'm up for it :)
