In my job I have the luxury of dogging trucks. I have driven a 2001 F-150 for 180,000 miles and a 2000 Chevy for 120,000 miles. I must say they are both junk! the fords front end is so loose 9worn out), I have gotten pulled over for drunk driving not to mention the 2 transmissions its had. The chevy is better on the front end but out of the last 6 chevy's in my area 4 of them have had transmissions put in @ 60,000 the rest @ 80,000 or so and those trannies arent cheep not to mention fuel pumps and bearings/hubs on the 4x4's that seem to fail when ever you turn around. I would stick with the Nissan Titan hands down, much more reliable and better riding truck. Oh and you will never see a fleet Dodge truck wonder why? (you may see some small business's with a fleet but thats probibly the last time they will buy them) they are junk!

I had to say the Ram, but that's mainly because of the Cummins. As far as the Titan's concerned, it has the same rear end as my mom's '90 Jeep Cherokee. I'd perfer the Dana 80-90's that are in my Dad and Brother in Law's Rams. The last thing you want is your rear end going out while coming off of the Sierra Nevadas.

My friend's Dad bought a Dodge 3500 Cummins and it's been in the shop twice already. Once because it died on him and left him stranded on the freeway and then immediately after getting it out of the shop (they had it for about a week) it wouldn't go over 50mph on the freeway. I haven't heard anything since but we will be driving it out to Blythe in a couple weeks for some bird hunting.

Sounds like a fluke the first time and a sucky shop the second. Maybe a stuck wastegate on the turbo.

But diesels in general, and in particular these Cummins engines, are idiotproof.

I'd get a Ford Lariat or XLT F250 4x4 CrewCab with the 6.0L powerstroke diesel, and with the 5spd automatic; I couldn't imagine myself rowing through a 6 speed manual on a truck like this, esp with a trailer behind me.

'05 Dodge Ram

In there extended cab/crew cab variant the lengthened the cab by 3-inches giving way to more comfort for the rear passengers in '05 models

I'd get a Hemi Express if I didnt need 4wheel drive. Chrome 20's, color keyed bumpers & grill, side steps, towing package and a Hemi!

Big incentives as well will knock the price down a lot.

what titan do you have that is 4 years old and has 120K miles on it?

how can you say its reliable? it doesnt have the background to back it up or to knock it down.

You really need a truck? When my 1988 Ford truck finally gives up the ghost, I'll probably replace it with one of these utility trailers. Any of the cars in the driveway is capable of hauling it. Hell, any of the trunks are capable of hauling quite a bit as it is! There's not much sense driving a truck around all the time, when you only haul large items once in a while. A utility trailer can be used for that, as well as hauling stuff around the yard, if you have a tractor with a ball hitch, which I do. Yep, I'm pretty certain a utility trailer will meet all my hauling needs, probably even better than a truck, and MUCH cheaper too!

I've had great luck with my Chevy Silverado Z71 Ext cab. I'm 6'2" and have plenty of room to spare. The truck has tons of power and gets better gas mileage than my 6 cyl Jeep Wrangler.

Good luck with your search,
MM

I had a similar quandry a few months back, feel free to read my impressions of the Titan and F-150 here

In the end I would up buying my old 99 Silverado back from my sister for a work truck. It has 115,000 trouble free miles on it, my Dad just sold his 99 Silverado with 180,000 trouble free miles on it and a guy I work with has about 220,000 trouble free miles on his 99 Silverado.

My wife is taking over driving my 99 Expedition with 144,000 virtually trouble free miles on it, we will sell her car.

Quick mileage comparison if you care. These are all the basic city/hiway loop I drive everyday.

99 Silverado 2WD 15-16 MPG, and still feels really peppy to drive. It has the higher axle ratio that Chevrolet offers (around 3.50) and stock sized tires.

99 Expedition 4WD 13-14 MPG, lower in high winds, it really has a lot of drag. Headwinds can kill $20 worth of gas really quick. The Expedition has 3.35 gears and 33" tires, so it really struggles to keep the engine in its optimal torque range.

For comparison, our new 04 Silverado 3500 4WD Duramax/Allison gets 15-16 MPG has 4.10 gears and is always in its torque range.

I'm surprised to hear so many people bashing the RAM... I don't have a lot of truck experience, but a buddy has an 02 (?) Ram 1500 and for what he paid for it I'm always pretty impressed with it. And Jesus it's big.

Of course, I'm MORE surprised to hear that the Nissan has a Dana 44 in it.. that's bizarre...

Dodge because I am loyal.
I love the way the RAM looks too.. I just think the new F-150 looks like ass, and the Chevy just looks old.
but I am sure they are all pretty good trucks.

I would buy a Ford because I am partial to Fords and hate Dodges, Toyotas and Nissans :)
