With that said, I don't know if they are bogus or crippled chips - either way, to present them as any kind of indication of the performance we as consumers can expect from BD is IMO incorrect.
Exactly :).

Very good point! There is an absolute lack of good old common sense to the FUD speculations that BD will not perform competitatively to similar priced intel parts.

If these benches were true, AMD would not bother bringing it to the market.

With that said, I don't know if they are bogus or crippled chips - either way, to present them as any kind of indication of the performance we as consumers can expect from BD is IMO incorrect.

Well there were speculations in May/June that the BD/mobos were TDP capped and they were not running at the frequencies posted they were running. Given those chinese people used a bios from that time one can bring back those speculated rumours.
In which case we can safely assume the speculated problems with the rumoured results and the rumoured information that the result could be trustworthy for indicating a working ES. (which ofcourse we already knew with the Dirt3 demo)

dma0991: Thanks for the chart reference. It's what the marketing department of AMD prepared for unreleased Bulldozer chips. I've had my 2500k for over 2 months and they have been out since the beginning of the year. I'm seeing a pattern here. Intel= power per core and efficiency and AMD=?? probably on the Bulldozer side brute strength and increased cores. My wife and I bought a Pontiac Solstice GXP with the 2 liter intercooled turbo with the direct injection engine. The power output per cylinder is amazing (260HP/260ft-lbs Trq and ours is tuned. I had it dynoed at the wheels 280HP/321 ft-lbs TRQ). At my age, 60, I come from the V-8 era where only the V-8s had the cubes to give you real HP/TRQ. Not anymore. Direct injection etc produces fantastic power from much smaller displacement. Intel=Direct Injection AMD=? cubes/cores? In fairness to AMD isn't the Bulldozer really developed for server applications?

Does this happen for every release?

No. It also often happens even when there is no actual release, like Intel's Larrabee.

This is just a pastime for hw geeks like us. The less actual information released, the more fun it is -- as it leaves more leeway for our imaginations.

Highly suspect. It takes a solid 7-9 weeks or longer just to get it out of the fab. Then packaging and distribution. If they started mass production on August 1st. I wouldnt expect to see anything until middle of october at the earliest.

Why not? AMD had plenty of time to do all that......You think they will start packing and at the last minute?

We should be able to get it higher than that. Come on folks, make your guesses.

Clearly this deserves 100 pages.

A 4 core BD will eat a 2500k like fried butter on a stick.

That is to say with much burning in the mouth, a huge grease stain on its shirt and a turning in its belly. Tasty!

In some seriousness, I am considering upgrading the wife's PC by just buying an AM3+ board and using a cheapish PII 945 from the forums and if BD is worth it buying one. She is running a Kuma @ 3Ghz now, so it will be more of a future proofing exercise and selling off the DDR2 while it is still worth *something*.

That said, is finding an AM3+ BD going to be like finding a true AM2+ Phenom 2? Because that has become a PITA.

What do you mean? The article said mass production starting in August. I am giving them an August 1st start date. It takes a solid 2.5-3 months from fab start to being on a shelf. AMD cant speed up the process.

I thought an 8 core BD was supposed to speed up all processes???

eh? you can use an AM3 PHII/AII in most AM2+ motherboards as the AM3 CPUs have DDR2 memory controllers in them as well as DDR3. There should be no need to track down a 940 or a 920.

I do think that BD is more optimized to be with a server and less likely to be as good where single threaded performance matters. I think that it is more of a R&D budget constraint that is holding AMD back from making a better single core. In the event that AMD does make something that is as good as Intel with the same amount of budget that they have now it would take much longer to develop with less manpower than Intel and by the time it is released it would be obsolete.

Here. Rampant bickering and speculation. Almost nothing has changed.

I really do hope that BD is successful. I might upgrade my home server that platform later this year depending on price/performance/features.

Yes, the rampant bickering was why I locked it.

Was it the only single reason ?
Anyway, the buzz has just found another place....

Willing to close it for the same "single" reason ?...

One could as well close a road because a few drivers
are speedy guys...

I gave up on waiting for Bulldozer and ordered at i5-2500k. It is hard to beat the performance of that chip for ~200 clams.

The information that is out there (very little) and the fact that it has been delayed constantly does not look good. That being said, I do hope AMD actually does have a winner on their hands and are not relegated completely to budget CPUs.

The 990 series chipset looks pretty excellent, lots of features, plenty of pci-e lanes, etc. That is one thing AMD has going for them and maybe the next Bulldozer iteration, which is when? Q2 2012? might not disappoint. From what little I know this is looking like Phenom I and Phenom II all over again.

This one is tame compared to that flamefest.

But yes, a few bad apples can ruin it for everyone.
