never used an ftp before, I recently registered at dreamhost.com and I don't have ftp software, is it essential in transferring .html/.swf files?

Open cmd.exe. There's a command line ftp client available there.

For a free FTP client, I too rocemmond filezilla.

Though my long standing favorite is and has been Flashfxp for a good 6 or 7 years now.

One note, Filezilla server is very good but it does not support secure connection (FileZilla Client does).

can't you just open up interenet explorer and type ftp://yourdomainnamehere.com? Isn't it built in to IE?

does the command line ftp have passive mode? i couldn't seem to download with it.

Thanks for the info on FileZilla. I was using some crappy client (CoffeCup FTP), I'm going to swtich.
