I think these "club" cards are a total crock (no offense to Aussies or crocodiles or Steve Irwin the Croc Hunter 😉 ).

They track all your purchases and tout savings "you can save up to $50 off" or some B.S. like that. In order to achieve the $50 off you have to spend an insane amount of money like $2,500 in one year. Sure if you have a big family you're shopping for but our average visit only costs $15 or so.

What's even more troublesome is our favorite grocery store Albertson's is copying Safeway in offering their own "Club Card Savings" program.

$#@!$!%!

i don't understand why this is such a big deal... they still let you shop there without a card, right?

Yes of course but you don't get the "Club Card Savings".

but you just said that savings they tout are BS.

costco + sams club rock anyways 😉

Yes Costco does rock.

Anyhow big brother is watching.

Yup. Just give them fake info.

Then, if you win anything, you won't get your prize for providing false information. That's part of the user agreement at most places.

dont they word the agreement so that falsifying information is a misdemeanor?

I never understood that to be so, but I wasn't looking for that when I read it. :Q

i just give them my real info, best case is they harass me and i take em to court 😉

How could they? Do these grocers now write and enforce the law?

no but most states and even city/counties have laws about falsifying your identity. All they have to put in is a few lines pointing out any such law, and they could report you to the cops.

I'm ticked off at Albertsons, not because they HAVE a card now, but because previous to this all their advertising was touting the fact that they DIDN'T have a card. I think they took that down and started issuing cards in the same day. That bugs me for some reason.

I noticed the same thing.

I held out for a few weeks, & then they offered me one with no form to fill out. So both my roommate & I use the same number, & they have no info on us (unless they associate purchases with credit card numbers, in which case we're screwed).

Well, they all give these cards out for free, and who says that the information has to be correct. Hell, you could put Osama Bin Laden on the card with a return address of Pakistan and nobody would say anything. It would be pretty funny though because at Safeway they always make a point of saying thank you Mr. (X) on the way out. I can just see it now. "Thank you Mr. Bin Laden for your purchase of ding dongs and cheerios..."......😀

In Kansas City we have the following:
Price Chopper - Makes you use the privacy invasion card to get a discount and there's nothing special about the chain.
Hen House - Also uses the privacy invasion card but they do carry some specialty items and their stores are > average quality.
Hy-Vee - NO privacy invasion cards, great prices, employee owned, excellent customer service, keeps it super simple.

I shop at HyVee 🙂

I don't think you're being paranoid, marketing companies would tap your phone line if it were legal.
On the other hand, why don't you just use false info? Do they mail the card to you or do they give it up on site?

As a full time database programmer I know the power of a relational DB.
This over agressive marketing + the .gov's TIA does scare me a bit, the potential for abuse is just too great.

Just my opinion

I don't think vendors are allowed to keep card numbers on record, its too dangerous...

You can also ask the checkout person to borrow theirs. Ive done it before they dont seem to have a problem with it.

I'm annoyed with Albertson's too. I used to always joke with hubby and refer to Albertson's as "savings without the card"...but now it's not that way. AHHHHH!!!!

haha i found that really funny for some reason

Here's how my store USED to do the card thing :

The card was free. You gave us your address and name and you didn't even have to give us your phone number if you didn't want to ( we didn't sell it to anybody anyways ). Your address was used to send you a coupon for $10 in free stuff and obviously we used your name on that and to keep with your account.

Why the hell is everybody so uptight about needing a card to get stuff? You give your name and address and that's it. Are you afraid somebody is going to come and break into your house?

You know what, I control all the food that you buy in that store and I could do far worse things than figure out where you live.

YES the stores do track your purchases to see what items you buy. They DO NOT link them to your name, but total them up to see if the customers are buying them. The stores lose revenue if they are getting stock nobody buys so this will help them figure out which are their most popular products.

I have seen customers save up to $20 / order using the card alone so please don't say that you don't save any money. We stopped using the card after stupid customers kept complaining that you needed a card to save money. I didn't see what the complaint was since you saved a lot of money and it made you feel like you were a part of the store but it obviously wasn't up to me. People acted like it was such a PITA for them to fill out a 30 second form and for us to give them a nice little card.

The sheer paranoia of the grocery-shopper community in America is astounding.

I can't believe anyone would seriously think they'd get in trouble for falsifying a customer loyalty application.....Good GOD, people, get a flippin' clue!

and then you realize that over a full year, a good shopper can save hundreds, even thousands of dollars with these cards. I personally think its worth it, and a lot of others do too.

and then you realize that the grocery store raises prices from what they would be so you're not saving anything.

Really though, this is kind of silly. If you don't like a store's particular policies, go somewhere else. Very simple concept....🙂

So whats the difference between a card for a store with no membership (grocery stores mentioned) and membership stores (costco, sams) ?

Arent both trying to offer lower prices though some kinda "card" ?

Huh? They don't know what people are buying if they don't use a card? They could always use the tried-and-true "how much is in inventory" method.

The stores here won't let the cashiers use their card. But I've had success in asking the person behind me if they wouldn't mind letting them scan their card. Most of the time they are delighted to do it.

hmm, that hasnt been the case yet with me. but yet, that could happen.

i use those cards. I also get coupons mailed to me. CVS (pharmacy) has one where you get dollars back ($$ off $$$ coupons). while i went to school in manhattan (nyc) Duane Reade (pharmacy) had sales with their card, 70 cents for a 1 L bottle of dasani filtered water. very good for ppl who commute and want a cheap drink for their lunch.

if you're gonna use their card you should give them your info, you should get a clue if you think its "okay" to give false information if you think you can get away with it.

Inventory doesn't always do it. It's hard to keep track of sampled/stolen goods. It's much simpler to use the computer to do this. Our store's registers are too old for it to do that stuff by itself so we use a 3rd party tool to track the card purchases. You are right in that many new stores actually have nice registers that will keep an individual inventory of products.

Our cashiers will also swipe a card for you. Hell, they're all in high school anyways so they're not going to be like, 'No! Don't save money here!' 😀

Well if you some of you guys are already pissed about those cards this is gonna piss you off even more.

I was reading online somewhere that Giant Eagle was testing in certain markets making the savings card have a small fee that you pay every 30 days. I'm pretty sure is was like $5.00 or so.

My God you are stupid....sorry, but i can't believe you think it's a crime. Better not touch that tag on your mattress either.
