I just went to frys and got one of these. With NET MD you can now burn minidisc up to x32 speed with its USB connection. I never got a minidisc because the thing used to have to burn in real time. So you would have to wait 5 hours to burn 5 hours worth of music, now i put 5 cds on in about 15, 20 min. Its crazy. It also has g shock, so no skipping, Type R, for awesome playback, and MLDP so you can cram a done of music on one disc. I have been using it for 2 days and this thing is freaking unreal how cool it is. 1 AA battery last 56 hours too, compare that to a CL nomad. And the thing is really light, and build quality is really good. CHecK iT OUT!!!!

NetMD is and MDLP are going to make minidisc ALOT more mainstream...

Minidisco.com has the MZ-R501 for 139 i dont know what the difference is with the MZ-N505 tho

ive had my MZ-N1 for a while now and LOVE it... just wish there was a source for prerecorded md's still... oh well i'll just have to stick to my Friends 54,000 mp3 ftp.

hm way way way better then vanilla md, but still far from perfect:p ipiods have 5GB of storage alone and its the first of what will be far better ones in the future:p net md longest play setting is pushing it for music.

ooooh a riced-out MD player ;) MD Type R!

NetMD is and MDLP are going to make minidisc ALOT more mainstream...

The only reason it's still around in the US is that Sony has deep pockets and refuses to let its inferior proprietary technologies die.

Yeah, cuz you know, that's exactly what we need - comments like that because you know, we don't like Sony so we hate everything associated with them, including CDs. :(

ANYWAY, with the way NetMD and MDLP are pushing MD, it is a far superior technology than any other media that size with the same storage capactity and price. Oh wait, there is none for that price. Shucks. Even though the MSRP of the N505 is $150, I think that's a helluva deal considering what it can do. Time to sell my MZR-700......

The MZR501 from Minidisco.com for $139 does NOT support NetMD. It only supports MDLP so for $150, the NetMD unit from Sony is a much better deal, although I suspect the one for $150 is their low end unit. Pefect for those of you who just want to record MP3s and play them back, but not so good for anyone who uses the MD player to record concerts and such.

The biggest weakness in most of the portable MD recorders/players is the lack
of digital output ports. Many MD decks have them, but not many portables.
If you wanted to transfer an MD recording to CDR (much cheaper than MD blanks)
you would need that in order to keep it digital all the way.

Sony as a company is terrible. Uninspired ID, poor quality control, proprietary technologies instead of standards, the recording industry, overhyped PS2 launch, the Everquest comment from their executive, the list is practically endless. Fortunately for them, their marketing creates a large base of very loyal fanboys.

MD will never gain a decent market share. Hardware and CD MP3 players are getting smaller and cheaper every day. For $150 you can get a decent product in either of those categories.

Anyway, regular price on a single color is not a Hot Deal.

IshmaelLeaver if you werent such a DUMBASS, you would realize that the "R" you so affectionatly refer to as "riced out", denotes that the unit RECORDS instead of just plays back!

i for one will never own an ipod, i dont like them, period. i dont care how big the HD is. it looks like cheap high impact white plastic. with chrome thrown in to make people go "oooh shiny, must own, it sparkles"

i prefer the minidisc because it has recording capabilities, and is versatile, there arent any DECENT recording mp3 players, and if there were chances are they wont be as widely used for recording anything in decent quality as the minidisc is.

i do now see that i posted a non net md version in the MZ-R501 sorry i wasnt paying attention it was late

Just curious... why are the NetMD models priced lower than the earlier models? (eg., from the Sony Web site, MZR500 is $180 while MZN505 is $150)

80 minute MDs hold 700 megabytes, right? so its the same size storage as a cd based mp3, in a whole lot smaller form factor. so thats a plus. the media is $2 each, so thats a minus, but its rewritable, a plus. cd rws are still kinda pricey anyway. an mp3 playing cd player is quite a bit cheaper though. so thats a minus. but this thing has more style than most mp3 playing cd players i've seen.

versus hard drive based mp3 players like the ipod this is about the same size, has a lot cheaper buy-in, and is more stylish than most. i don't know about the interface, the ipod has a really nice interface that is easy to pick up. the lcd might not be big enough for a good track listing and playlist. to get 5GB buy 7 discs. $14.

versus flash memory types, this is larger but has a ton more storage, and the storage is far less expensive. battery life is probably shorter, get a rechargable if cost is a concern.

Battery life on my MZ-R700 rocks compared to my Nike MP3 player.

Even when recording with my MD player.

Not sure why, but it's really alot better.

80 minute MDs only hold like 150 megs. its compressed. The sound quality is far and away above mp3 quality. an 80 minute MD with 2x mdlp can hold like 160 minutes, of 130+ kbps mp3s. That said, i like my MD player i just dont like the time it takes to record, which a netmd player would give me. this particular player doesnt have a remote, like the mz-r500 so well, its super low end. i have an mz-r900 right now, and well i'd probably want something similar to it.

MD is not a bad technology especially since it can record, its can replace cassettes. the best thing about it, that mp3 really dosent do now, is you can pop out a disk and give it to your friend. i know you can do that with CDs also, but the MD cartridges are more durable and you can record them, you are much more inclined to share discs. that and its easier to carry a bunch with you since they are smaller.

also aiwa and panasonic make MD players also, and casio and a few other companies used to, so its not total a sony technology.

For all you music lovers out there....the minidisc is the BEST tool for recording live concerts. You can simply put it in your pocket, clip a mic to your shirt and record the whole show at near-CD quality. I know many people who do this. I am looking into getting a new minidisc recorder primarily for this purpose. I haven't done any research yet, but do any of you guys know what a good portable recorder is for around $200?

Thanks,
Brian

Long live the MD!

I was at J&R's Computer World (Lower Manhattan) and I saw this Sony computer with a NetMD drive BUILT INTO the system. Does anyone if they sell that drive? I have an MDLP player and a seperate system for recording but doesn't support MDLP.
