I've had cans explode in the freezer before. They sound like gunshots... it's definitely not something I'd want to put my face next to.

Anybody ever do that freezing alcohol trick? You get the stuff to below freezing but the carbonation keeps it from icing...you give it a tap and as the carbonation is released the stuff freezes instantly?

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a freak coincidence/accident involving a similar phenomenon...below freezing but the pressure/carbonation prevented ice. As soon as he disrupted the structure of the can the released carbon and pressure of the extra cold/freezing soda caused the can to "explode". I'm sure it didn't blow up like a brick of C4, but we lack a sufficient level of words to describe things accurately. If I got cut to hell by a soda can that unexpectedly ruptured I would probably say it exploded.

I've had a couple cans explode after putting them in the freezer to cool.. but never catastrophically like that. Sounds like a stereotypical 'chinese quality' can :( Poor kid

I, also have had a can blow up on me. I was working a concessions stand in high school, and I opened the freezer to find that someone had left a whole bunch of soda in there. I took it out and picked up a can to see if it was frozen solid, and it went off right in my hand. Half-frozen sugar water got everywhere, but I didn't get hurt. I remember there being two separate "bangs", for some weird reason.

None of the other cans exploded, though.

It was CHINEESE soda.

Must have been all the pee pee in it.

I had a soda explode in my beer fridge (set to super cold, someone put a soda in there)

The fridge was like *POP* and the door flung open. For the tin to shred your face, you would have to have it right against your face. Unfortunate, but its not really the cans fault. I've frozen cans for fun before, its not really all that dangerous.

Yup!

I dunno how it would explode outside the freezer. Don't take a can just out of the freezer and play with it/hold it near your face. Duh.

He's lucky it didnt take his head off. I hate when people put canned soda in the freezer..then, when it comes out all warped with the soda having pushed the bottom of the can outward, they don't want it anymore or just leave it in the sink to see if it will explode while thawing.
