A frozen cola can exploded in a young boy’s face in China, leaving him with 38 stitches.
The boy reportedly placed a Pepsi can in the freezer so it would cool down quickly. But he left it in the freezer for too long. When the boy popped the tab, the can burst, shooting aluminum into his face and mouth on August 25.
After being rushed to the hospital, the boy received 38 stitches in his mouth and face

i remember freezing soda before, but i don't recall any resulting aluminum shrapnel

My sister went to college at Notre Dame and had a car there. After going to the grocery store, she accidentally forgot a 12 pack of Cherry Coke in the back of her Explorer. The Coke sat in there for a couple weeks in the middle of winter and ended up getting so cold all the cans blew up and splattered the insides of the windows, carpet, roof, seats, etc. She had to get the damn car detailed to get all the stains out.

Is it even possible to?

I've frozen sodas (by accident) before and I don't recall it being possible to pull the tab to push down the opening since there is froze/hard soda blocking it.

This if its really frozen you are not going to be able to push the tab down. And even if you do how would it make the frozen pepsi explode.

Its China. Everything explodes or poisons or maims people, and occasionally buildings collapse because the support columns are built out of used garage cans instead of concrete.

We had a nutjob at work that froze a can of Mt Dew then tried to defrost in in the microwave, it blew up, wrecked the microwave door when it shot out, luckily no one was in it's path..

yea be careful with glass in the freezer too heh.

i opened a 12 pack of beer that wasn't too cold, so i put one in the freezer to get cold quick. 5 minutes later we left to go somewhere and I forgot about it.

went to get something out of the freezer the next day and saw this.

EDIT:

"You essentially have a bomb on your hands. It's not a major bomb, but it can be dangerous," Corbin told the Daily News.

LOL. BAN SODAS! THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY BOMBS!

Cans are a lot thinner today than they were some years back. I suspect that's a contributing factor.

LMAO ... this. I remember that article I read where a bridge was collapsing in China...and inside of the concrete was straight up garbage. ROFL. A hollow support column filled with garbage. Just...wow

We use to store our pop/soda in an unheated room in the winter. Every so often, the floor got sticky cause a can froze and popped.
