http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/android-2-2-froyo-to-include-usb-tethering-wifi-hotspot-funct/

And the good Froyo news just keep flowing in. TechCrunch have flexed their exclusive muscle this morning in revealing their discovery that Android 2.2 will come with built-in tethering and WiFi hotspot support. That means you'll be able to use your phone's 3G internet connection to hook your laptop up to the worldwide webosphere, with a choice of wired or wireless methods. Of course, this dreamy scenario will be subject to the big bad network operators permitting -- or at least not forbidding -- you to do such awesome things with your hardware, but at least we know the goods are being baked into this forthcoming release from Google. Frozen yogurt for all!

Even though this has been available on most aftermarket ROMs, and it would still have to be enabled/supported/allowed by the carriers, its still good news.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/android-2-2-froyo-and-flash-run-like-butter-on-nexus-one-vide/

While Adobe evangelist Ryan Stewart wants us to focus on Flash 10.1 performance -- admittedly impressive -- running on his Nexus One, we can't help but be distracted by the Android 2.2 "Froyo" build apparently supporting his device. Can you blame us? It's not like we're alone with waning interest in Flash, especially for video playback. Anyway, from the looks of the homescreen in the grab above, we'll be treated to an updated launcher, Android tutorial, and global search box when the OS is revealed (presumably) at Google I/O starting May 19. And with the giant Froyo statue apparently already delivered to the GooglePlex's confectionary art show, well, the stage is set for 2.2 to be launched in time for Adobe's planned June release of Flash 10.1. Get your glimpse into the future of Flash and Android in the video after the break.

Looks awesome but by the time the update is released for my Incredible (thanks to HTC SenseUI), I'll probably have a new phone by then since my Droid is going on eBay today.

I'd like to see how it does on 3G (Flash).

i imagine games/apps would take longer to load, but once loaded would perform similarly, and streaming video etc. would be lower bitrate/quality

also I just noticed that it was plugged in / charging. i'd like to see how it performs running on battery, and also how it affects battery life.

The write-up failed to include this cock-up:

Here’s what happened: On his Mac, Ryan pulled up a site called Eco Zoo. It is, seemingly, a pretty intense example of Flash development — full of 3D rendering, rich interactions, and cute little characters. Then, he pulled up the same thing on his Nexus One. The site’s progress bar filled in and the 3D world appeared for a few seconds before the browser crashed. Ryan said (paraphrasing), “Whoops! Well, it’s beta, and this is an intense example — let’s try it again.” He tried it again and got the same result. So he said to the audience, “Well, this one isn’t going to work, but does anyone have a Flash site they’d like to see running?” Someone shouted out “Hulu.” Ryan said, “Hulu doesn’t work,” and then wrapped up his demo, telling people if they wanted to try more sites they could find him later and he’d let them play with his Nexus One.

It may still be beta code but I think they are setting up for a massive fail.

the engadget write up with the youtube video merely back up his claim that its beta. he goes to the same website and it loads perfectly fine.

You can bet Adobe and likely google knows the battle they put themselves in with apple so they'll have their people up working 24hrs if they could to hammer everything out.

what I want to see is which phones will get froyo and specs of those phones.

One might consider clicking the link in the thread and actually viewing its video before posting things like this.

No, it does not demo Hulu, which of course is a shot to what they're doing - but it shows multiple games, streaming video, and flash navigation sites - including Eco Zoo - running without issue.

I don't expect it to be 100% as good as the desktop experience...realistically, a lot of websites don't look 100% the same on mobile without Flash, either. However, I'd say this looks pretty solid. And while it may still have some bugs, and while it may drain the battery, I'd still prefer to have it as an option than not have it at all.

They've had 10 years to get Flash working at an acceptable speed and without major bugs on the PC and Mac and have failed. How in the hell are they going to bang the mobile version into shape in a few months?

You will all be able to use the 10.1 beta soon enough and judge for yourself.

As long as I can disable it. I'm looking at getting an android phone and I really don't want to have flash support.

On my HTC Incredible, which has Flash Lite, there is indeed an option to turn it off. I'd expect most other Android phones will have similar settings.

Sounds like you've already passed judgement.

Awesome. I'm looking at getting a nexus one in the next few weeks.

I posted this a while ago...Google confirmed that 2.2 would have flash.

But just so I'm actually adding something to this thread....Tmo has announced that it will give MT3G users an OTA update VERY soon that will upgrade them to 2.1 with sense. I might actually go back to stock when that comes out. Just to see how it works.

Unless I can get this 700mhz overclock kernel to work....

I don't get it, we were told Flash would not run well on smartphones and it wasn't made to work well with touch screen inputs. This video must be fake :D

I am waiting to get one of these, just so I can sit next to iPhone yuppies and tell them: "Stop watching my Hulu, get their own, oh wait you can't, haha, too bad, so sad :)"

yea, like what steve jobs said! how dare you not take it as gospel...

Hey, you'll be able to judge for yourself next week. Hope you have an extra battery and a charger at the ready. Oh, and Hulu is blocked so there goes 50% of the incentive. The ads still work, most of the time.

Didn't someone post in one of the other threads that they got the Flash beta for their Android phone? Not allowed to post impressions?
