"But sir, any company you go to will have you sign a 3yr deal"

We'll see. I'm fairly confident I can get a similar deal w/ a new phone and a 1yr agreement somewhere else... I'm just waiting on my current phone to die. So I'm month to month on sprint and I guess that concerns them.

Wow, a 3 yr contract. They are truely nuts. Take your number and go to a different company, there are tons of better deals out there right now.

On a side note, anyone hear of ATT Wireless and I think its Cingular merging, or maybe it was Sprint? It would make them the largest cell provider in the US.

Cingular has officially announced an offer to aquire ATT, that is all.

Yeah, they are nuts on the 3yr contract. Simply insane.

Is Cingluar GSM or PCS? I know AT&T is GSM; too lazy to search.

ATT is both, Cingular is GSM only IIRC.

There was rumor of a 3 year contract for $250 off the price of any new phone. I'd probably do this since I've had zero issues in more then 3 years with Sprint. In fact I just renewed a few months ago for another two years to get 7pm nights/weekends and unlimited pcs-to-pcs. What's another year on top of that?:p

The cell wars are about to heat up. If the merger of att and cingular goes through, then watch verizon fight back to try and take the top spot back from them. If you are locked in a 3 year then you can't get in on the good deals.

Its Sprint! You'll always have the best deals thanks to Retention. My retention plan from 2002 is still competitive now. I haven't even called them to get a better one. Sprint works for me! Besides, I would never touch ATT or Cingular in my market anyway leaving only Verizon. I doubt Verizon will budge much. They seem to enjoy sitting on their network coverage while providing trailing edge technology.

I am waiting for Verizon broadband network to come out this summer. The two markets it has been available have been a huge success and having an unlimited connection for $79.99 for 2mbps anywhere is an awesome thought.

I was a corporate customer with 3 personal plans. Got 25% off monthly and free wireless web. My 2 other lines wanted to switch out due to poor coverage so I called them up and they dropped those 2 without too much incident. I inquired about upgrading my remaining line so that I'd consider staying with Sprint (even though coverage was still spotty). All they gave me was 8pm instead of 9pm and first incoming minute free. Big whoop. Been with them 4-5 years. I took what they offered and 2 months later, I ditched them... thanks to VZW portability. I don't get as big a discount or the wireless web free, but the coverage and customer service is noticeably better.

Maybe if there was one I might still be one of their customers. I was with them for 4 years, and when my contract expired in November all they offered me was a camera phone for a reduced price of $250. Thanks.

Went over to cartoys and signed up with t-mobile. 2 free v300's and $150 cash back.

Bite me verizon.

That is a shame. Verizon does have a retention program and I am surprised all the offered you was a camera phone. I think I'll call BS on this one. You can walk into a store and get the camera phone for $150 before the $70 rebate and thats been going on for awhile. You probably had a poor payment history or maybe you got a rep who just didn't give a flying f@ck if you cancelled or not.

Sorry, I had a typo in there. They offered me 2 camera phones for $250 (I was on a family share plan). That was it. I complained that I was paying too much and that other providers were charging a lot less for the same plan. The rep that I had just didn't care, so I said screw it and said goodbye to verizon. T-Mobile is great. I love all the features of the service and my new phone. My coverage area is less, but the only time I ever travel outside of it is on a highway that I travel maybe once every couple of months.

By the way, I had perfect payments as they billed directly to a credit card. So that wasn't it.

Cell phone newb here... I want one, what should I look for? It seems that Sprint and Verizon are the only ones with decent coverage from Rochester to Syracuse, NY.

If the coverage is equal you will get a better phone and plan with Sprint, no question.

what's wrong with contract? it doesn't concern me anymore. if you have something else beside tmobile, just break the contract and get a free phone with $200 rebates on it from tmo. I got v300 and with a $100 rebate. so I am paying $75 for breaking the contract. I could've got the x105 for free with a $200 rebate to make $25. :D

Another thing to look at is customer service-
Verizon is much better than sprint in that regards.
I work for Radioshack and it is amazing how many people hate sprint just for that, not to mention I call both companies endless times and 10 to 1 I will have a much easier time with verizon.
For new phones, Sprint just started giving exsisting customers rebates after 2 years, but make them mail in the rebate and pay full phone price (plus tax on it). They are NOT flexible at ALL about the time limit to be eligible for the rebate.
Verizon on the other hand gives instant rebates to the exsisting customers and will be flixible if it is clear the customers account is in good standing etc.
Just a couple other things to think about.

Retention has been offering phone credits for existing customers for a long time regarless of how long they've had their current handset.

ok- but it's not like thats obvious to anyone who calls in....customers shouldnt have to know who to talk to to get a decent deal.
Kinda sad they would only do that to people who are threatening to leave...

I never threatened to leave;):p But yeah, it is a bad that you have to jump through hoops to get credits. Sure took them long enough to have an official upgrade promotion.

I work for Verizon and would love to tell you guys the retention policy but would hate getting fired over it. The bottom line is that if you have a good payment history with us then we will basically bend over backwards for you. If you are constantly late on your payments and have outstanding balances then it becomes harder to justify keeping you if you are only billing $40 a month and can't pay it.

SpazzyChickin That sounds more like it for the 2 phones for $50 off the 2 year retail price. Sorry about the bad experience with the rep. If things don't work out at the new guys we would always love to have you back. ;)

My contract with Sprint is up in about 3 weeks. How long should I wait before I call?

Call now. No harm in that and no guarantee you'll get what you want first call.

AH-HA! So the truth is revealed:p So when do the real phones hit the market?;):p

Well the new....

***thunk noise as the door is busted down***

me: "Hey, who are you guys?"
the men with black shades: "We told you not to say anything, now you will pay!"
me: "Ahhhhhhh"

I would love to tell you but I actaully don't know. Most things like that are kept to a very few in the company. The audiovox pic phone was released but pulled quickly as they found a problem with it. I was hoping to pick it up instead of the LG 6000. The audiovox might be out again soon but I have no idea. We actually find out only a couple of days before things like that happen.

Seems like the 8900 is back on the shelves, it's at all of my local stores...

and I've never had a problem getting what I wanted from Verizon. Phone swaps, bill credits, whatever. I'm just nice when I call, and I pay my bill on time. Sprint didn't seem to care that I was doing either of those things, and their coverage sucked to boot.

Thats what I get for not being at work for the past week. Looks like they put it back out.
