Playing on console doesnt guarantee a level playing field. There are SD vs HD tv, size of TV, internet access speeds, surround sound/headphones/built in tv sound. Some people even have third party controllers. And guess what, life isnt always fair. People with high end systems would be perfectly happy only playing against others with the same types of setup. Its the cheap bastards that are holding everyone back!

Even console players deal with latency so that's another point of unfairness. I guess we should all play with 1000ms lag time just so the slow mofos don't feel disadvantaged. Oh wait, some dude with 1600ms ping just logged on (he should stop downloading adult videos while gaming). I guess we should all play at 1600ms instead.

No reason bring half baked political rants OP. Your friend is correct in that competition for pleasure is conducted according to formulas and often these formulas are very strict to ensure fairness. Spare me the "life is unfair" stuff. In the real world athletic competition routinely focus regulation on ensuring a level playing field. You are correct how ever in that PC gaming is a very loose formula and accepted as such.

Internet connections will vary with a console. Someone with a 20ms ping is going to destroy someone with a 300ms ping no matter what PC or console hardware is involved.

What about TV resolution, the person with a 1080P TV must have an advantage over the person with a SD or 720P TV. 16:9 aspect ratio shows ALOT more on the screen than a 4:3 SD aspect ratio, giving the person playing on a SD TV a serious disadvantage.

How about surround sound vs stereo, hearing things behind you in a game is a massive advantage.

Consoles are far from equal when you take display and internet connection and sound systems into account, not to mention controllers, i mean the guy with the turbo controller obviously has a huge advantage in some games, or the guy with a arcade style stick for fighting games(street fighter for example) will have a massive advantage over someone using the stock controller.

Your friend needs to stop being a crybaby and snap back into reality.

Something that's extremely unfair with console gaming is that the host gets a tremendous advantage. Dedicated servers are much fairer than p2p for multiplayer gaming.

When i used to play Unreal tournament 2004 competitively me, and all the other players, changed the resolution to 640x480 and everything in low graphics, no dinamic lighting, no high res textures, not even the view of our own weapon, and the server used a program to make the other players look shinny and with the same model to make it visible and fair.

and we all could play it in 29031x94801231 resolution if we wanted to

I was the same way. I found it interesting, but a ton of my classmates acted like it was the most enlightening thing they'd ever laid eyes on. You know how hippies tend to talk about the experience that "changed their perspective"? They were talking about 1984 like that. It was mildly sickening. Then again I guess I did read about 4x as much as your average high schooler. I was probably a lot more used to dystopian future stories.

Yep, it is called NASCAR. Some forms of racing however have wider open formulas, like Formula One. A wide open formula is probably a better analogy to multiplayer PC gaming.

I don't think the "friend" was even remotely suggesting this? To the contrary, a basketball game is probably the type of competition the friend had in mind, where success is the result of athletic superiority not equipment.

BTW I agree with the points several posters made that equipment variation in consoles undermines the premise of the friend's argument.

I really don't know why people have consoles anymore, I have a few friends who buy new console games 2-3 times per month at 60 bucks a pop and complain about pc gaming being too expensive.

Should have picked another make and model of a car,like the chevy luv,the pinto,the aspen or the yugo,bigger funner piles of sh*t,the metro is a half decent vehicle,just gutless as the day is long.

Ironically, I have a friend who thinks that it's better that PC gaming is more differentiated because it's more capitalist(he's very far right). He has nothing to say but bad things about people who are too cheap or poor to use anything better than a console, so there are people who are on the completely other side of the spectrum OP. I spend less on my rigs than he does but I totally pwn him in anything competitive.
