Friend Claims PC Gaming is Unfair

My friend has the consistent need to argue about everything. His latest argument is about PC gaming, because I just built my own gaming PC.

He says that PC gaming gives an unfair advantage and that gaming shouldn't be played that way. He feels that consoles are better as they offer standardized gaming where everyone has the same performance and nobody really has much of an unfair advantage. He also says that it's not fair for someone who has less money and can't spend it on affording a nicer gaming rig so therefore that person is unequal.

I feel like this is becoming a bit political -- not saying politics should necessarily play a part -- but when he starts bringing in equality and everyone having the same things and the competition being completely fair -- wait, isn't that communism?

My counter argument was that modded controllers give an advantage. He says that a slower PC doesn't stand nearly as much of a chance against a high-end PC.

This all may be true. I understand what he is saying, but having a nice gaming rig makes it hard for me to sympathize.

TL;DR Friend thinks PC gaming is unfair versus console gaming because PC gaming is very customizable and therefore allows one player to have an advantage over the other.

Any counter arguments? I'm sure this has gotten at least a few of you fired up.

Its a zero sum game captain don't bother going down this road. Yes your friend is correct that more money=better internet access (ping)=better PC/video card=better monitor resolutions. So yes he is correct but noboday cares this is a GAMING debate not a health care/tax/employment/retirement issue nobody cares if gaming is fair or not, its just supposed to be fun.

Bullsh*t argument. Many very good PC gamers turn down all the details when they play competitively.

You can lower settings and resolution to match what your system is capable of.

As for his "fairness" statement, it's a load of you know what. Ask him if people should stop doing sports because it's unfair against lazy people. Or people should stop driving cars or eat fancy food cause of people who can't afford those things.

Such whining comes mostly from lazy people - get a grip, start steering your life, get a job and start enjoying life - is what I would tell him. No person is born equal to another person - some play instruments better, some do sports better, some have a creative mind... I could go on and on.

The winning question is whatever game you are playing more fun on a console or PC?

I do enjoy playing on the console due to the surround sound setup I have, the large TV, the controller vibrating, and the comfortable couch + the fact my friends use consoles.

However, I absolutely love the customization of PC gaming, the beauty you get as a result of such customization, and the idea of building your own computer and having full control over its' capability. I'm on a fence as to whether or not I prefer console or PC gaming.

PC gaming just gives more options. For a console, if you don't like the feel of the standard controller there are very few other options for you. So does that put the person who isn't comfortable with said controller at a disadvantage to the person that does like it?

Like eye candy? Jack all settings up and even get some mods, like having more FPS? Jack all setting down to give you insane numbers. You can make PC games fit whatever you want.

Sure, having a better system gives you more options but you still are not severely limited nowadays with graphics becoming stagnant thanks to consoles dragging this gen out.

Sry but your friend sounds like a complete twat, politicians who think like him are dangerous, they'll take away our liberties without a second thought and force us to live how they see fit in the name of some ideal that they subscribe to, in this case fairness. It's ok not to like PC gaming for any reason you want and its fine not to take part in pc gaming but anyone who says that others should not use PC's to game can go uknowwhat themselves. I personally don't like Democrats or anyone who seeks to control my life when I'm not doing anything wrong. If I murder someone and I get arrested that's fine but using PC's to game does not classify as doing something wrong. /rant

Haha. I agree with you about the way of thinking. There's nothing wrong about PC gaming, and I shouldn't feel guilty for winning a match because I have a strong PC that I built myself and worked for myself.

Life isn't fair. Why can't people just accept this statement? We can't change all of human nature, nor should we try. It only will cause further problems.

Gaming is like any sport where equipment is required.
At the end of the day, skill will tend to win out, but those with money can afford better equipment, be it a PC, golf clubs, a tennis racquet or running shoes.

Tell your friend he is an idiot and needs to get a clue and grow up.

This is true in fairy land.

You've failed to account for the fact that those who are "born higher" actively sabotage and take advantage of the weak; even the lower-born who are trying hard, and doing their best to contribute to humanity. :(

There is a reason for government and things such as affirmative action, because the initial momentum can favor the primary party so much, that it may hinder progress.

For example, women in the work-place, they can be just as productive, just as creative as men. However because we've historically socialized women so differently, it lead to abuse, and the lack of foresight to utilize the female's full capacity.

Historically women are our greatest untapped resources. Put the bitches to work, I say that respectfully.

You're right life's not fair, we're all different and our circumstances are all different and trying to make life fair would result in a total loss of our freedoms.

People PC game voluntarily and if someone keeps losing because their PC sux then they can get a better PC or get a console or if all else fails, they can read a book, PC gaming is just a form of entertainment after all. This guy wants to penalize everyone who enjoys PC gaming because some people can't afford it. Well, some people are born retarded, maybe we should take a drug that retards us to make it fair and while we're at it, some people live in poverty, maybe we should destroy all our belongings and retard ourselves, then we would all be in same boat and it would be much fairer.

Hmm... or... the guy with a bad PC could save up and buy a new one, we could work to find a cure for people born with handicaps and we could embrace capitalism and build factories in poorer countries and give them jobs so they can buy their own belongings and not be starving. And this would actually work better with more freedom, not less.

Internet connections will still differ for console users, so take that out of the comparison.

Next, ignore all single player gaming and co-op gaming, since it's PVE and "fairness" doesn't apply.

You're left with better computers being able to display at higher resolutions and/or with more eye candy in online PVP multiplayer gaming. Does that give an advantage? Maybe. If it bothers him he can stick with his console. The rest of us can play if it's fun, not play if it isn't

I've beaten the utter crap out of people with far better kb, mice, trackballs, or whatever, with far faster systems. Turn down your graphics if you want to improve your framerate. It's not that hard. I remember playing Quake at 320x200 to get competitive framerates until I could get a better video card.

You can buy different controllers, different speakers and headsets, etc. in consoles as well.

Anyway, life is not fair. You can whine or you can do something about it, whether it's to get in better shape or get a better job or whatever. And even then life STILL wouldn't be fair because there's always going to be someone better-looking, with better connections, etc.

TL;DR: You said it yourself: "My friend has the consistent need to argue about everything." Obviously you have a defective friend. Replace him with someone less argumentative who can deal with real life better.

Unless the game is terribly coded/designed there should be no advantage in playing at high settings vs playing at low settings.

Now of course, if your system is so crappy that it can only play a game at 5 fps even on low settings, that's another story. But you obviously don't care that much about gaming in such a case.

So does your friend own a console or any other type of modern convenience, TV, phone, mobile phone, computer, car, etc. Because if he does it is not fair that he has any since many people in the world do not.

Gaming, like collecting coins, antiques or comic books or baseball cards is a hobby so you must pay to play,it isn't unfair and the first sentence of the original post suggests he just likes to b*tch about anything and everything.

There is plenty of other things that are unfair in life for some people, like people born with a heart condition or have other health problems, but pc gaming is a choice and console gaming can be as expensive as pc gaming, when you starting buying all the accessories so there is absolutely nothing unfair about pc gaming.
