Fried amp?

Not sure what forum to post this in..

I bought a kicker L7 10" solo-baric a few months ago. Also bought a brand new kenwood amp.

The amp I got is the KAC8103D. It's a mono amp that is 2-ohm stable. It pumps out 500w RMS @ 2 ohms. Well the L7 holds 1200w PEAK I believe. I built the box from the Kickers site(ported).

Hooked it up parallel so I could get a 2-ohm load out of it since it is a 4-ohm DVC sub. Hooked it up last night without any problems. Sounded great. Was on the road this morning quite a bit and around 2pm(been working all morning/afternoon) the bass just stopped. I pulled over and saw the amp just turning on and off. Everytime the amp would power on the speakers would make a heart throb like sound.

I tested the speakers(with a AA battery) and it shows to be just fine. I unplugged everyhing but the ground, power and remote to see what the amp would do. It just turns on for a second then turns off, over and over.

I've taken the fuse out of the amp and the hot wire(4-gauge) with no success. The amp is brand new.

I have no idea what could have happened? FWIW I put a new battery in a week ago so it can't be that. I'm guessing the amp got fried? I don't see how it could have if that's the case because I ran it at exactly what should have been no problem for either the amp or sub.

Any ideas?

Also, I registered it with Kenwood.com today. Does anyone know if I get a 1-year manufactured warranty? Bought it off eBay.

Many places on ebay will honor the manufacturer's warranty because the manufacturer won't because their products aren't being sold by an authorized dealer. Check with the place you bought it from.

As for the amp it does sound like it got fried. Usually the builtin overheating or overload protection should come on and prevent any damage but sometimes they're just not 100% fool proof.

Sounds like the amp is fired or internal connectors to the sub's voice coils came loose, in which case you should take the sub out of the enclosure to check the connections. Do you have a fuse located on the power wire that's 1ft (at most) away from the positive battery terminal? I actually have the 12" Solobaric model with a Kicker amp and it hasn't given me any problems at all in 2 years.

I suggest going through Kenwood to get the amp replaced if it is indeed fried, I've had success with getting one of my old Kicker subs RMA'd through the manufacturer even though I bought it on eBay, though it's not an amp and is a completely different company then Kenwood heh.

Sounds like a blown transistor.

Where you listening to it loud? You may just have been pushing the amp too hard.

Give the amp a good sniffing and see if you smell any "burnt electornics" smell.
