  • Here is what she said:
“Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. F-ck outta here with your nice words,” Jarrar said in a tweet which is now protected.
    :
“If you’d like to know what it’s like to be an Arab American Muslim American woman with some clout online expressing an opinion, look at the racists going crazy in my mentions right now,” Jarrar tweeted.
    :
The university describes the professor as an “award-winning novelist, short story writer, essayist, and translator” on its webpage. It said that the professor relocated to the United States after the Gulf War from Kuwait and Egypt.

Ok, this is very similar to the Google situation where the employee got fired.

Should this professor be fired because it looks like a possibility right now. The ACLU is making noises that it might intervene if she gets fired.

Because it is looking like she will be fired. Do you care if she is fired? She is a tenured professor and that is a 100k+ position she could be losing.

I will be amazed if there is an actual attempt to fire the prof in question. The university would be begging to make this a far bigger issue if they tried because they'd be looking at a nice, well publicized, court trial which they would most likely lose along with dealing with all the attendant bad publicity for the uni. I suspect that within a week of or so nobody will even remember her name.

Mind you, that presupposes that she actually has tenured status at the uni because if she doesn't, she's pretty much fucked.

As we know the right has been raising voices against what has been going in college campuses - the censorship. But now they are demanding actions against professor. Is there anybody these days who has any principles, or they are all just slimy bastards?

This is a principled libertarian response :

Haybusa - this answers your post too.

Nevertheless, Jarrar's comments are constitutionally protected speech. Fresno State is a public university, and its professors enjoy broad free speech protections. Students, other professors, and the broader Twitter community should feel free to vocalize their disapproval of her comments, but Jarrar shouldn't lose her job or be formally sanctioned by Fresno officials.

For the record, as I said in that McCain thread, I have never understood this business of being "respectful" to dead people. I am not talking about this situation as such. In general. Bad dead people still continue to influence the living bad people and thus are still harmful to society

And what relationship does the above cartoon have to do with the concept of university tenure?

With or without tenure a prof can be kicked. Source- Married to a tenured professor.

The difference between her and those not tenured is that there needs to be cause for termination or sanction. The cartoon illustrates that one is not immune from consequences and this could be seen as cause.

No one should care what she thinks and she should not be fired for it. Freedom of speech. Dont like what she says. Dont read her twitter. Easy as that.

There's a lot of truth to what she said about W being a war criminal.

There was no need to invade Iraq.
