Not the same thing at all. What they are doing would be like the American Government deciding that words like spaghetti, taco, schnitzel, etc...could not be used and instead make up some new name for them.

I can see their point in to desiring to keep the French language true but e-mail is such an internationally recognized and used term that it will be difficult for this to take. But who knows, if its use is widely promoted in news and advertising, it will eventually overtake the use of e-mail. Seems kind of stupid that the French government is forcefully mandating this in their agencies though. These kind of things usually happen naturally.
