French Exchange Student might be my next roomate UPDATE!

I've been trying to get the other rooms in my apartment rented for a few weeks... This French exchange student, Oliver, called me and told me he was looking for a room. I arranged for him to come by and check out the apartment. He seemed pretty cool. He's 21 (I'm 19) and he never smokes. He said he cooks a lot. He speaks little English - about the same as the tech supports from Pricewatch companies. He looked fairly clean cut (except for some decent-looking dredlocks), smelled fine, etc. He will only be staying for six months. Anyway:

What are some things I should be aware of?
Do they get insulted if I should say something wrong?
What things might he do that would annoy me?

UPDATE:

He called me today and agreed to all the lease terms and so I let him move right in. He's VERY polite and he's eager to pay for all his expenses - groceries and stuff. He isn't that tough to talk to - I spent pretty much the entire day running errands with him. He helped me clean my kitchen even though it was a mess that I created when I installed a garbage disposal. So far, he's really cool. He isn't taking any classes at UF. Instead, he's doing research in the field of Mechanical Engineering. And YES - he NEVER smokes! (I already knew that was rare for French people) I'm pretty excited.

Oh, and BTW, he wasn't offended when we were walking through the toiletries isle and I told him to buy soap. It was funny because he was looking for soap but not bar soap.. So when he said he didn't use that soap, I thought he meant that he doesn't ever use soap. So I said "Smelly French People." He laughed and repeated what I joked about earlier - "Stupid Fat Americans."

It was really funny later on in the day when he said he didn't want any more French people to move in my apartment because he wanted to be "Stupid Fat American" while he's here.

The French... get insulted?! Ha! You should be more aware of them insulting you (w/o previous discretion that is) they are quite the easy going people... but they don't have much manners so to speak ~ or so the stereotype goes 😉

Good luck on your housing

You can start by calling him Olivier ( Oliv-yay)... 🙂 I doubt it's OlivER.

LOL first real, hearty laugh I've had all day. In the words of Kurt Angle, "It's true, it's true"

There are whole threads on the French in this fourm. Read them. Also consider the possibility that if you do get him as a roomie and want to get rid of him all you have to do is bring over a German and roomie will flee.

Just hope no one tries to invade your apartment while you're away, because he'll just let them right in

😉

First off, don't read the threads about french people. Do you want to start out with a negative attitude twoards someone you will have to live with? I have had 4 french exchange students live with me. It is kind of a crap shoot. Either french kids are really cool (just like us americans) or they are dweebs. The cool ones don't like to sit around on their asses. They allways want something to do. The dweebs don't do anything and will quickly get on your nerves. Hope you have a cool one.

Americans tend to have a notion that all french people suck. The French think that even more (in my opinion they are right) about us. However, the fact that he wants to come live here means that he likes americans. That means that you have to prove to him how cool we are. Maybe try to introduce him to some people so that he can make some friends.

A french person that doesn't smoke? I bet he still smokes ganga and drinks 🙂
