I've been trying to get the other rooms in my apartment rented for a few weeks... This French exchange student, Oliver, called me and told me he was looking for a room. I arranged for him to come by and check out the apartment. He seemed pretty cool. He's 21 (I'm 19) and he never smokes. He said he cooks a lot. He speaks little English - about the same as the tech supports from Pricewatch companies. He looked fairly clean cut (except for some decent-looking dredlocks), smelled fine, etc. He will only be staying for six months. Anyway:
What are some things I should be aware of?
Do they get insulted if I should say something wrong?
What things might he do that would annoy me?
UPDATE:
He called me today and agreed to all the lease terms and so I let him move right in. He's VERY polite and he's eager to pay for all his expenses - groceries and stuff. He isn't that tough to talk to - I spent pretty much the entire day running errands with him. He helped me clean my kitchen even though it was a mess that I created when I installed a garbage disposal. So far, he's really cool. He isn't taking any classes at UF. Instead, he's doing research in the field of Mechanical Engineering. And YES - he NEVER smokes! (I already knew that was rare for French people) I'm pretty excited.
Oh, and BTW, he wasn't offended when we were walking through the toiletries isle and I told him to buy soap. It was funny because he was looking for soap but not bar soap.. So when he said he didn't use that soap, I thought he meant that he doesn't ever use soap. So I said "Smelly French People." He laughed and repeated what I joked about earlier - "Stupid Fat Americans."
It was really funny later on in the day when he said he didn't want any more French people to move in my apartment because he wanted to be "Stupid Fat American" while he's here.
