Freezer on top or bottom?

(I don't like the side-by-side type refrigerators.)

One salesman told me the freezer-on-botton ones are more efficient.

I'd say bottom. We're getting a new fridge and my roommate has decided to get a bottom freezer, top fridge. Things in the fridge will be within eye's view.

However freezer top's have more models available, so you may get a better deal.

Top.

My parents have a fridge with the freezer on the bottom and i hate it. to find something you have to get on your hands and knees.

Bottom freezer rulez! Puts the refrig right at eye-level, nice since that's what you open most.

Also, cold air sinks, so it's coldest at the bottom, right where the freezer is. Makes perfect sense :)

Yeah, side by sides are suck....gotta put frozen pizzas diagonal :|

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't heat rise? Meaning that it would be a better idea to have the freezer on the top so that the cold air would trickle down towards the fridge?

And RossMAN, aren't you married? Or is your wife your roommate?

True. They seem to be around 15% cheaper.

Yeah and you can't put wide trays or wide platter dishes in them...unless you have one of those huge ones.

Sometimes I'll take leftover large carryout pizza and just stick the whole thing (with the pizza box) in the fridge. Can't do that with a side by side.

That's true...my old one blew up a few months back so I had to buy a new one. I'm not a big fan of the side by sides either, too cramped, so I knew I wanted either a top or bottom freezer model. I did quite a bit of research and some reading on Consumer Reports' site....turns out that the bottom style is more efficient than a top model. Not really that much though and both are WAY more efficient than side by side models.

Married living with a roommate in a big 2,000 plus square foot house we have the entire basement to ourselves so it's not cramped at all.

Our freezer is on the bottom. Think it's an Amana. It's much easier to get to the stuff in the fridge. We only get in the freezer part when it's time for ice cream. most of our frozen food is in a freezer in the garage anyway.

I'm pretty sure Amana is still the only manufacturer of bottom freezers, regardless of the name on the door ;)

Badge-engineering, ya know.

I wondered about this when me and a friend were debating on acting like a gay couple pretending to be appliance shopping while at lowes.

read the energy star rating for all the models you are interested in that will tell you. personally I like a separte fridge and separate freezer, Much more efficient and more space and can actually cost less. How? buy two upright 22 cuft freezers and turn the temp up on one and use it as a fridge.

It does seem like you would end up on hands and knees often with the freezer on the bottom.

What if you don't eat nasty frozen pizza? I like my big side by side with filtered water and ice dispenser. :)

Those ice/water dispensers take up a fair amount of freezer space, though....plus they can be a service headache

I'm of mind that I get into the fridge far more often than the freezer, so I prefer the fridge to be at my level, instead of stooping down to get to it. So I'd vote freezer on bottom.

My parents have one of the Amana "bottom" freezer fridges and the freezer part has a giant cage that you can fill up. You can slide it out like a drawer and get to the food easily instead of having to get down on your knees and dig around. Nice and handy feature.

I never knew freezer at the bottom ever existed. I prefer side by side so that I can get my water and ice dispenser, and I could care less about "efficiency" unless its going to save me some major money. I don't want to make my own ice cubes and I don't want to go digging through the ice bucket for them either. Also provides me a source of non-tap water.
