I really prefer mwsnap for screen capture. it doesnt do everything snagit can do, but it covers the basics really well.

Thanks, I'll check it out.. but it's last updated in 2002!

Though I'm used to SnagIt, I only need basic functions as well 🙂

Some third party reviews that support the assertion. *Suggested by beer. Comments also by beer.*

looks like phpEDIT is shareware now...

Didn't see an entry for backup/sync software so I'd like to recommend that SyncBack be added for that.

SyncBack link

They also have a version you can purchase but the free is great for backups and synchronizing (yes there is a difference)

I like WinRAR the best, why isn't it on here? It's shareware, yes, but with unlimited use. You've put other stuff up on there like that.

NetVampire is no longer freeware, by the way.

Star Downloader stinks: It doesn't even catch all of those direct download links that you can just copy and paste to download (even in IE!), and for those few that it does catch, it catches half of them wrong (I have no idea how that's even possible).

I'm looking for a spyware remover. I'm considering the Spybot search and destroy. I used to use it on my old pc but I have yet to install it on my new one. Is there a better alternative or is this still among the best?

Question on the screen capture programs... Do they screen cap from videos? I know Prt Scrn doesn't capture what was displaying on the video at that moment... Just comes up with a black box where the video was playing...

Thats due to the fact that the video is overlay. You would need something like PowerDVD or ATI MMC to do screen shots of the video. Unfortunately I am unaware of any freeware software to do this.

I like mp3 DirectCut for editing music but I will checkout Audacity. Also you might want to note I read that Itunes puts special codes on mp3's your rip from your cds onto the tracks so they can track what you do with your music.

I have found a new tool that helps prevent you from going to sites with spyware, adware, viruses, or even just poor content. The tool is the ReviewToolbar which allows users to rate sites, so that legitimate sites are easily distinguishable from malicious sites that contain malware. The program embeds site ratings directly in the search results of the web's most popular search engines. The best thing is that like all good tools, it is free. It is available for free at http://www.reviewtoolbar.com

SQuirreL SQL Client is a pretty good open source database tool. I've been using it for a little while and i'm very impressed.

It requires JDK 1.4 and set up is pretty easy

Haven't found much i don't like about it except for memory usage.

It's a pretty good replacement to PL/SQL Developer, of course there are some things it can't do, but overall its pretty good
