Hi,

Here's another free mail server I found:

hMailServer

From the Site:

"hMailServer is a free, open source, GPL-licensed e-mail server for Microsoft Windows. It supports all the common e-mail protocols (IMAP, SMTP and POP3) and comes with an easy-to-use COM library that can be used for integration with other software. It also has support for virtual domains, distribution lists, antivirus, antispam, aliases, distributed domains and much more. E-mail data is stored in a database server, MySQL or MS SQL, depending on your choice.

The hMailServer installation contains a minimal MySQL-installation, so if you don't already have a database server in your network, MySQL is installed automatically when you install hMailServer."

The fact that it can store data on a database looks great, as it allows for easy maintainable backups, or even access from other apps 🙂.

Here's a free file recovery software I found:
Pandora Recovery
Completely free File recovery software for NTFS. It saved my life when a backup of a drive I was formatting failed. i recovered my files from the formatted drive.
They have a Thumb drive for sale that you can use to run the software from and recover files to, but you can download the software itself for free and install it on your PC.

I just picked up a portable version of Notepad++.

Awesome. I was about to ask here about a good portable Windows editor I could put on a 128M thumbdrive, and followed the links around.

This is going to be awesome (but I still won't be able to compile until I get home from work).

Please Reconsider FlashGet in Download Managers
It used to contain spyware but not anymore
much stable & powerful now

there any other firewalls besides zonealarm and outpost that people might recomend

I need one too, Kerio and Sygate used to be free but no longer. Zonealarm is kind of heavy on the RAM. Sygate was very transparent until Norton got their bloody hands on it.

Look in our Software / Security forum here on AT for lots of suggestions. Recent suggestions I've seent here are Comodo Firewall and Jetico Personal Firewall v.2 as the currently most effective software firewalls, as compared among retail firewalls both free and paid-for. And both of these are free..

One more piece of software ... I received a new laptop from my company, and I'm making an efford to install only legit software.

So far, I've been successfull.

Today I looked for a free compress replacement software, and found the following:

jZip

It's currently in version 1.0, from July 2007, and looks promissing. I took a look over it, and I'll install it on my computer.

They entitle it as "A free alternative to WinZip".

Price is good ... "jZip is absolutely FREE for everybody, home and enterprise users".

Nice. 🙂

I am suprised Fastone Image viewer isn't mentioned on this list.
I like it more than Irfanview and have been using it for quite a while. It has an excellent interface, great pop-out menus (from top, leftand right sides and the bottom of screen) while view images full screen. Image processing, red-removal, batch processing, comparison, etc etc.
They have a couple of other additional apps which integrate with it.
All free for personal, non-commercial use.
Try it.

any screencap/videocap freeware out there? I remember lotus software suite that used to come with a desktop videocapture feature.

I'm looking for something to record a video of the desktop or a specific app window.
