Freeware image batch processor?

I just discovered that my gf has about 25GB of pics floating on her drive - and the images are ~4MB a piece.

Got similar issues with some product pics at work. So my question: I've been using Fireworks' batch image processor to cut things down, but my trial version expired and I don't like Adobe apps anyway - too big and bulky for my needs, and way too expensive.

I know there are freeware batch processors like BIMP out there, but I'm concerned that they may not have as good of a file size:image quality ratio as Fireworks does. My gf wants to be able to print her stuff, so we need to maintain high quality while reducing file size as much as possible. Probably gonna save everything as PNG to prevent degradation with any editing we do later. Recommendations?

Any consensus on the quality of Irfanview's jpg/png filters vs Fotosizers?

Ixskllr: I have GIMP but as far as I can tell you have to write macros for batch processing, which imho is pointlessly clunky. I was looking at BIMP but it hasn't been updated since 2008 which makes me a little skeptical about it being up to par quality-wise.

I'm gonna give Irfanview a shot for now... if BIMP is competitive that'd be perfect though - I like keeping as few apps on my drive as possible. 🙂

You should be able to find a plugin for Gimp, but handmaking one is a one time process, and you could then use it forever.

Do you have duplicate images or something? 4MB per image doesn't sound like a lot for today's sensor resolutions. Personally, I'd rather get more storage than lose image quality.
 
I'd use ImageMagick. (Write your own batch file to run it. 😛) Or use IrfanView.

If you need to shrink the file size of PNGs, use PNGOut. (Again, write your own batch file for the free version.)

If you need to archive the images, I find that uncompressed BMPs compressed with a general archiver like 7-zip are smaller than their PNG equivalents.
