Freedom of Speech ever so slightly eroded

Note Scalia's opinion:

"Even when used as an expletive, the F-word's power to insult and offend derives from its sexual meaning,"

Up until now it had not been decided whether "fuck" by itself (as in: "Fuck Work" or "Fuck this stupid thing" as opposed to "come here baby I wanna fuck you in the ass") - was allowed on TV. Obviously the latter is patently obscene with its sexual overtones, but by itself - the word "fuck" by itself (at least as decided by the state where I live - Florida) - was not obscene.

So up until now it was totally OK to have a sticker that said "fuck work" on your car. Now with this opinion I'm willing to bet that if you try that same thing - the prosecution will cite that case as precedent and you get nailed for obscenity.

The high court, however, refused to decide whether the commission's policy violates the First Amendment guarantee of free speech, only the agency's enforcement power. The justices ordered the free-speech aspect to be reviewed again by a federal appeals court.

Not as bad as it sounds.

I'll take that bet.

Fuck that, what a bunch of fucking pussies in this world. It's just a god damn word you shit head beautiful being mother fucking cunts.

That's hardly either eroded or new. The courts have been trying to weigh in on this for a loooooong time now.

Thing is, it's not really speech if it just consists of crude gibberish.

I'm assuming you idiots up in arms about not being able to say FUCK on TV in prime time don't have kids or you simply go around the house saying it in front of them. Grow the hell up. This is no erosion of first amendment rights, you have not ever been able to say words like this on network TV and only recently have the rules been relaxed to allow it after hours. This is a non issue. If you want bad language in your movies/shows watch cable or rent a DVD. Do you realize how quickly TV would degrade to pure crap if these words were allowed with no regulation. TV is already mostly junk.

I agree.

The only good shows are HBO history specials every now and then, Rome, Band of Brothers, John Adams, etc.

And Entourage is good.

But most of it is just mindless garbage and swearing.

It's just a word, I guess I don't see what the big deal is. Whether on TV or elsewhere your kids have probably already heard it and used it. Seems like the best thing to do would be to explain curse words to them and when it's not appropriate to use them.

It's a word is a lame explanation. Sure, ***** is just a word too, right?

Both can be equally offensive, and I'm not saying both aren't used by normal people, but there's a time and a place.

Can I then say the "N" word any time I want? It is just a word, right? We can explain to all the Black people and everything will be fine right? I bet your answer just changed.

As to the bolded part of your statement....prime time TV is one of those times that it is not appropriate.

All we need to do is have an adult-programmed filter, that is pushed to all adults that current have cable equipment (bill in their name, put the stuff in there), and mandate the use of a filter. Hell, even enable the filter from the start unless an adult programs the filter with a code to allow uncensored content.

All analog equipment, thankfully going away, would simply broadcast the content pre-censored.

What am I alluding to? Well here, any network would be able to have day-time, prime time, or any other-time shows with explicit dialog. Have a super smart chip, or maybe a little code insert in the audio track that triggers the chip, to do its thing according to whether the access code is enabled, and couple that chip with a timer option, so parents can watch uncensored, and 2 hours after the code is entered, it returns to censored.

We can have all programs say fuck, shit, and the rest of the glorious expletives, and when the censor is enabled, when the word motherfuck is said, it either replaces it with "monkey-fighting", or "monday-to-friday", or "Mr. Falcon", possibly programmable by choice, of course.
😉

Say ***** all you want, I couldn't care less. Might want to be careful about who you say it in front of, though. 😛

I can understand where you're coming from, but I was just explaining my opinion on the matter. Like I said I don't see much point in shielding children from words like this when they will inevitably be exposed to them outside the home.

edit: Didn't realize that word was blocked. Damn ATOT censors stifling my free speech!
