most definitely not a scam. It's thoroughly documented through MS, backed up by channel 9 and cnet at the very least. You'll start getting "I GOT MINE" posts to this thread mid-late january when they start shipping them.

I finished and got a confirmation email but haven't received anything about the tax stuff...the W-9 is what I've seen elsewhere. Anybody get any further stuff from them beyond the confirmation email?

*** I see the earlier reply dealing wif my question.

Sure hope I get these late Christmas gifts from M$

The W9 is only supposed to be shipped with Vista IF you did both promotions.

I skipped the Office promo because I can get Office at a steep discount through my employer. Technicially, it is for a temporary license that expires when I leave my employer, but I think the entire office package is something like $39.

I signed up for the Visa software in late November. They sent me an email with the ten different videos I was to view. I didn't start viewing these till two weeks later, most likely because the server was jammed. When I clicked on the link to each video in the email I got, it put in a "recording ID" and a "recording key." All I did was enter my name in the box. After viewing a few of these, I got survey emails, which I filled out.

The problem is that I can't log onto the website anymore, so I can't see my viewing status and if I met the requirement. I watched probably six of the videos and got survey emails for about four.

So my question is: is the recording ID and recording key included in the email an identification of exactly who I am and why I am viewing the videos, which is to get Vista?

b) Can you legally / easily sell these unused licences / products e.g. eBAY or whatever?
IIRC I've heard things like Microsoft canceling / forbidding eBAY sales of their
products etc. though I'm rather unclear as to what legal basis they'd have for preventing
an individual from selling a product they own and haven't activated at all...
Here's the catch: you don't own Microsoft product, you license it. Therefore, if you don't have a dealer license, you cannot re-sell it (well, cannot legally resell it, to be exact).

Example: you rent an apartment and your landlord says you cannot sublease it. If that's in the contract--tough luck, you're stuck with your lease term. Same thing here: if M$ specifies you can't sell this sh!t in EULA--you cannot legally resell it.

Bottom line: read the fine print.
Um, read any EULA (end user LICENSE agreement)... you dont own the software, you just get a license to run a copy of it....

Sorry to bring this back towards the top (for those people who didn't manage to get in on the deal), but i found some very useful information from a forum on the msdn website. One of the posters (Mark Brown) works for microsoft, and has some great info regarding this. He has confirmed that you get the media for Vista, and a download link for office. He mentioned a few days ago that they were shipping very soon, and should be able to upgrade Vista to ultimate thru the WAU.

More info here : http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=261537

Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering what the status of this is. I must say however that I will probably wait a while when I get Vista to install it. I don't want to be one of the first guinea pigs.

they've already had their guinea pigs, it's called beta testing. You can download the pre-release versions all over torrent sites.

pfft. if you don't think there's going to be problems beta tester didn't catch, boy are you naive.

i would guess the price would be around $100 as that's the retail price difference between business & ultimate

They didn't send out the notices by email...just go to vsd.powertogether.com, sign in, and click on "my stuff." It will tell you there whether you're going to receive the gift.

I am getting a "Service Unavailable" message when I go there although osd.powertogether.com works.
