WOT till about tier 7 pretty much isn't pay to win.I do sometimes ok with my tier 7 IS then sometimes i can lose.Going to tier 6 even as a noob like me honestly can happen with just about any line without spending a single dime.I have worked my Russian Heavy to the IS.

premium and a $5 tier 5 German Medium T-25 honestly could get you pretty far once you hit tier 7,i'm a noob in the game and i can bank damn near 3x the silver after repairs and consumable/ammo replenishing even with a lost and perhaps a single penetration and that is before premium. It is just enough to keep my IS replenished still gain a fortune.:)

Firefall, where someone thought it would be a good idea to turn the halo flood level, into a full blown mmo. ;)

there's a free shard of dark age of camelot, running a version before the game got the steam treatment. let me google that for you.

free to play is not the same as "free, hacked" mmo servers. This is against the ToS for DAoC and against the rules of this forum to post "free, hacked" mmo servers.

theres nothing illegal about that server. they have been up for ages and mythic knows about them.

"Used with permission of Mythic Entertainment"

how more legit can you go

2.5 years later, Star Wars TOR and Star Trek Online are still good choices for PVE F2P.

Both let you do a huge amount of story content without spending a dime of real money. If you like what you see you can spend a little for some unlocks.

i could write "used with permission from Apple" on my site too. totally legit dawg!

why would they authorize free servers (that allow the host to modify it in any way they want) when they still offer subscriptions?

Current terms of service prohibit this activity.

Also:
On May 29, 2014, Electronic Arts announced they would be "closing the EA Mythic location in Fairfax",[2] effectively winding down all the studio's operations. Despite the studio's closure, Dark Age of Camelot will continue to be supported by ex-Mythic staff under a new studio,[3] effectively keeping Mythic's legacy alive.

So Mythic is no longer in existence.

Oh yeah, ToR is a good call. If just starting out, their F2P model is pretty decent.

I was soured by it, though, because I had already paid sub and activation costs and whatnot for ~4-5 months, then the F2P model hit, and I was suddenly locked out of half of my account (extra characters, skill slots, storage, crafting options, end game gear, etc), and had to "buy it back" with "free tokens."

screw that. Now, these are things you can earn through a playthrough, and I think it's easy enough to get them as you actually need them, and for free...but I had already paid for all that junk, and suddenly I had to learn this new system to get all my crap back. jerks!

once you purchase a rights usage license, you can use it until the terms expire.

Do they have a legal agreement, or just an email from some random staff member, or are they just basing their statement on not being shut down in the past?

I'm skeptical because there have been many other fan projects for existing IP that have been "foxed" in the past when it turned out they never did get permission in a legal sense.

well, i did a bit of digging and this is what i found out.

1) "the shard" was opened when mythic was alive. mythic knew about this and they chose to take no action.
2) the server is coded by "the shard", doesn't use any code from DAOC - it only uses the visual aspect of the IP.
3) there is no express infringment of EULA agreements. Mythic (or whomever holds the IP for the images and names) could use a cease and desist if they wanted - but they have not.

Yes, that means their statement "used with permission" is not correct, since that has a different meaning than "has not shut us down for copyright and trademark infringement yet"

Many fan projects were ignored for years, until they were not.

So it looks like the mods are correct to block links to it.

i disagree. its maybe a gray area but you need to consider two things; one, mythic never took action against them, none whatsoever. if they thought this shard to be damaging, they would at least have sent a C&D.
second, we do not know that they dont have express permission. back in the days, they claimed to have an agreement with mythic. the shard was even discussed on the daoc forums. this isn't some blatant copyright infringment such as megaupload having the latest adam sandler film, its a different game engine using names and images developed by mythic. they have a disclaimer, have been active and known to the IP holder; i have no reason to believe it to be false.

> DC Universe Online

I've played a few hours of it and it was fun. It's worth trying if you like the DC comics universe.

> Guild Wars 1 and 2
> The Secret World

Last I checked these are only free after you pay cash monies for the client.

Actually, I'll second LOTRO. Back when I played, it was a fantastic game with a lot of the lore of LOTR in it and adhered to it quite well. Their Freemium model works well, there's a lot you can do without paying a dime, and you actually earn a good bit of turbine points just by playing the game so it's fairly easy to unlock content as needed. They run sales on their content regularly making it very easy to acquire any missing quest packs, and often times during steam sales and whatnot you can get expansion packs for super cheap giving you all the content packs for that expansion for ~$5-10 leaving you free to use your turbine points for things like character slots and whatnot.

It's a very mature game, and the graphics still hold up well for its age too.
