I got an email today about a free monitor online test from monitorsdirect. Generally you have to purchase software that's capable of testing monitors, but this is free, and doesn't even require registering. It tests stuff like convergence, colors and purity, geometry, streaking, focus, etc. It also has specific tests for CRTs or LCDs (like testing for dead pixels). Updated the link.

<< MonitorsDirect Tool Kit Requirements:
The MonitorsDirect Tool Kit uses Macromedia's Flash? and runs on Internet
Explorer 5.0 and later on all operating systems. >>
I know that my grandma's monitor picture is kinda bad, so this is hot for me, I want to find out whats wrong with it and perhaps adjust it if I get lucky and have a monitor with the adjustable controls that I need. It's also good if you want to test your current monitor, or test out monitors before buying them (as long as the store has an interenet connection, which most like compusa and bestbuy do).
oop found a downloadable tool that "runs on any platform that provides a wish interpreter." Whatever that is, I'm not sure
But it is in beta status, and its a tar/GZ file.

I found a link to test your monitor's greyscale capabilities.

And another link for a free d/l of a monitor testing program that seems to be able to work with any monitors:
