if it's P2P and encrypted, seems like you'd be fine. data goes from point A to B, unless M$ engineers in a backdoor to look at your data or send a copy to point C... which would be incredibly stupid and unlikely from M$, which is, despite being a monopoly, a great company as far as attempted software integrity goes.

this is different than the google "cache your HDD on our servers" because then you're data is open to all sorts of 3rd-party implications...

synctoy is between two computers on a LAN, no limits on files and has more options. Can be scheduled

folder share is betwteen two computers on a LAN or WAN, 500 file limt

Nope -- no more limits on numbers of files. I'm using this as a backup of my personal docs between office and home computers. Something like 16,000 files that are sync'd automatically offsite in case one hard drive goes.

We should mention that it's free FOR NOW -- it is officially part of the Microsoft Live beta, so who knows what they'll start charging for it later, once I'm hooked on it...

I've been using this for a bit and it's really good. You should definitely check it out. There are some free alternatives out there should microsoft start charging. There seems to be lots of different restriction values floating around this thread with no verification. The actually links below show the real restrictions. There is a 10 folder, 10,000 file per folder, 2gb per file limit. Since microsoft is labeling it "personal" edition, i assume it will remain free while an updated live charge version will remove these restrictions. Just my guess.

I was involved in the beta program of this a couple years ago and it was the best thing ever. I had a research trip to China for 5 weeks and every day I collected all sorts of information, GPS, GIS files, lots of digital photos (4 students also with cameras) and documents etc. When I came back to my hotel room at night I'd just plug in the lap top and everything was synced with my machine at work and at home in the states. I had 2 backups and others could start working on the data right away with no hassle at all. When it went to a subcription service I moved on to other things, but if it is free again I'm moving back as it was the most painless way to get offsite backups keep my laptop, home and office computers all synced so I didn't waste time checking file revision dates....
