FREE: Microsoft Foldershare

I was browsin the web and found Foldershare...It's a MS beta. It's pretty cool. You put it on two computers, and then you can transfer files from specified folders. It even has an sync option. It's pretty cool. I'm using it on my file server as an FTP alternative. Pretty cool, and it's FREE

Cool find. I may give it a shot. Seems like a great tool to auto-back up my media folder to another computer.

Me neither. A big difference that I see now is that there is not the limit of 2 devices to sync (max 500 files, and a maximum file size). Now it seems to be unlimited... Until MS starts charging for it...

Uses non standard ports (or port 80) for incoming. Won't work with our office LAN- no way they'll allow me to open ports for this.

Rats- so cool too.

I've been transfering some stuff from my laptop to my desktop, very easy to use. My only beef is that it converts spaces in file names to "+". So, "This is some file.doc" becomes "This+is+some+file.doc".

OP, thanks! This is really cool, never knew it existed. Will make the thumb drive (at least mine) less of a necessity.

Cool OP! Now I can sync between computers for free!!!

Does anyone know if the files are encrypted? The info seems rather thin on the site.

From the support page:

Is FolderShare secure?
FolderShare is a secure peer-to-peer system. Only you and your invited members can view or access files in your FolderShare library. FolderShare encrypts all files and messages exchanged on our network to ensure user privacy. All P2P communication on FolderShare is authenticated via RSA and encrypted via AES over SSL.

The new MSN 8 Beta has a neat feature like this too. You make a shared folder with one of your contacts and it automatically syncs files in the folder with eachother.

I'll have to check this out. 🙂

The cool thing is that this is supposed to be on the Origami...With a little tablet PC and this, you wouldn't have to store anything on the PC as long as you're connected to the net...

Guys - I've been using this over a year. It is truly one of the most convenient software on my PC / Laptop / Workstation / Home PC (yes, all 4).

I use it for backup and file synchronization.

I used to pay for the professional one - around $50 a year. Now it's free and they actually refunded me the unused months. The free version now is equivalent to the professional (paid) version a few months ago.

I'm sure they will start charging again for it soon... part of Windows Live. I'll probably still pay for it.

No VPN needed, just Internet connection. No worries of security as it's all securely transferred. Better than off-line folders.

Some kinks.. like same file changed on 2 places... etc. But that's to be expected for a program like this, and it's not really the program's fault.
