i had earthlink dsl long time ago for 50 bucks and it was at 1.5 down and 384 up.
now i have earthlink cable (by time warner cable in nyc) and it's 4M down and 400 up.

I think you're full of crap.
TimeWarner cable is 3mb down 384k
it was 2.5mb down previously and they upped it several months ago.

https://store.earthlink.net/cgi-bin/wsisa.dll/store/product.html?product=cable

i dont use any speed test, but i have a speed monitor installed and I constantly download from earthlink's newsgroups.

your right, i dont get 4M. more like average of 375kB/s down. but upspeed i get up to 45kB/s
so i just did some rounding up and down to be 4M/400

maybe my math is wrong, 375kB/s = 3M?

Anyone know if they will do the upgrade for me if I have a modem that wasn't issued to me by verizon? The modem they gave me is a Fujitsu Speedport RA14. It was for when I had 768 down/128 up. I now know that Verizon's standard speed is 1.5mbit, and in certain cases they could upgrade your speed through the phone line. So I called them, but they stated that it could not be done with my current modem and that I will have to buy a new one. I'd much rather buy a used one for now since their's would most likely be expensive. So I bought a Westell Wirespeed 2100 used from someone on the boards here. So I should be able to get 1.5mbit now. However, how will I have them upgrade my download speed to 3mbit since they will say I don't qualify because they will think I am using the older RA14. Maybe the RA14 can even work with 1.5mbit, because someone told me they had an RA14 and 1.5mbit. Maybe the CSR I talked to was just lazy and didn't want to do the upgrade.

Nice info. I'll be calling this weekend to request my upgrade.

On a side note, will upgrading your upload help your download? Speed tests show that my connection is ~1465, noticeably down from the 1.5 service. By upgrading from 128 to 384, will it boost my connection to 1.5?

As for testing, why not go straight to the Horse's Mouth!!

Link is for Verizon customers only... :(

No it won't. 1465 is noticeably down? 1465 kilobits = 1.465mbit. That's not noticeably down anything. Theres any number of factors that contribute to that "huge" gap of .035mbit that you're "missing".

You may want to talk to retention. There was a thread on here or F@tWallet about verizon giving away wireless routers/modems if you threaten to go to cable. Complain that you need the new equipment or that your current equipment mysteriously gets "broken" and you need something. I'm sure they will work something out with you.

Yes and no. Upload does help download in the sense that it needs to acknowledge the packets as it receives it. If you max out your upload, your download speeds may lag a bit. As for your connection only testing at 1465, that is pretty good. You have to remember that DSL and especially PPPOE have an encryption overhead(even more if you are using wireless with WEP or WPA) that take a small part of the TCP speed. Not to mention line condition, distance from the CO, load on the dslam, etc etc can all effect what your top speed will be.

You can also check out little applications like TCP Optimizer from Speedguide.net or even try the DSLReports Tweak Test to see if your TCP settings are kosher for your connection. Setting your Rwin and MTU can really smooth out some of that packet loss you may experience.

That being said, you are probably using the top end of your possible speed at this moment. I really wouldn't complain about a loss in speed unless it was a HUGE difference. Even then everything is tweakable. I would just wax my modem and wait until next month when they do the bump to see how much gain you do get. I hear carnuba wax is the best for FPS.

What are they telling everyone else on this? I called and asked to have it done and they said you had to be under 10,000 feet from the co. I am currently 11,000 feet, have they told you all the limit is 15,000 for the 1.5/384?

Saw this on FW the other day, and called Tuesday night. Was on hold for a while, since the automated system is one of the worst I've ever encountered (that and it would've helped if I knew to go right to billing... hehe)

Anyway, they said I was eligible for the 1.5 down/384 up, and that it would take 5 days. So I'm on my computer Wednesday morning, and I notice that I lost my connection. The modem light is slowly blinking, and then starts to blink faster, and then it's solid again. I do a speed test, and confirm that I received my speed upgrade. Very satisfying.

That really is up to debate. Honestly, the distance does effect the speed, but its not like if you were at 10, 001 ft away it does work, but at 9,999 it's just fine. You could call back and tell them you would like them to turn it on anyway and note your account that you wont call to complain if it's not the full speed. They just don't like turning it on because they can't guarantee it and our Nerdy butts get all bent out of shape if we are not getting the full reported speed. :D

called in , 1 minute wait time. it took a painless 2 minutes for them to upgrade me. Told me it takes 5-7 days, and on the day of upgrade, DSL will be knocked out for 5 hours. thanks again for the heads up.

Only reason I havent jumped on Verizon is the download speed. I get close to 3mpbs on comcast, but i hate them with a passion!

Yeah, they told me DSL would be out for an hour too, but I didn't even notice it go out. I went to the gym at 7:45 this morning, came home at 8:20, and at some point in there the change happened but oddly Trillian was still logged in and I don't have auto-reconnect enabled.

I am in the same boat as a few other posters here. I have had Verizon DSL since 99 (thru GTE at the time) and tried to get in on the 1500 upgrade a while back. My CO is still using the old Frame Relay technology, so canceling my account and hoping for a new ATM capable DSL modem was not going to help, simply because the existing equipment on THEIR end was not capable of 1500 speeds to my location. When I asked how I could find out if the CO would be upgrading to ATM, I was told that Verizon no longer gave an approximate date seeing as how they had missed many deadlines in the past and customers were getting upset when told to expect it by such and such a date. They now send out the ATM upgrades which arrive at the CO's doorstep and are simply installed at that point.
I usually wait 6 months and call them back, hoping for a new DSL modem and a faster U/L speed. I was thinking of switching to cable modem but Verizon has offered yet another 'carrot' to a hungry bunny.

Edit: Hmmm... I am being told that my account is that old, bought back in the GTE days as a 'retail' account, that I cannot be set up with anything faster than what I currently have. I now have to dial the local CO and inquire as to the location and availability of an ATM CO in my area. I would probably lose service for 10 days while they dump the old account and enable the new one ... :frown:

Edit2: YaY !! Got ahold of a very informative CSR at Verizon who has finally eliminated my Frame Relay retail account and set me up with a new modem and ATM service, plus a free month, PLUS dropped my monthly bill $5 to $29.95 !! :D I have to deal with 10 days offline but to double my speed, I will GLADLY do it. If anyone needs a helpful CSR, contact John at 800-567-6789 ext. 5083

Called up, fairly painless.

Going from 768/128 to 1.5/384 within the next 5 days.

Girl said that their system was down but she was submitting a form to have one of the night crew put the request in through.

Thank You............ been thinking about getting rid of my Dial-up ( sad only cost $9.95 mo. and always got connected at 48k+ ) but everyone complains they can't call me on the phone, ( I've left it connected for as much as 3 days ), so I guess I'm gonna loose my Peace and Quiet.
Now I've just ordered DSL, got the whole nine yards, and yes they will be increasing the download in July or so the guy said.
Not bad, $30 something a month, 1 month free, free modem, free ( After rebate ) wireless router.
Heck I can live with that.
Dangged AT effect

Oh, by the way I was told I'm 4,311 feet away from the center, ( I thought it was 4 blocks away ), I hope I get super speeds

Woohoo, I just got off the phone with the best CSR I've ever spoken too.

The lady this morning told me i was too far from the CO (11,500) feet away. Well I thought, hell let me call again so I did and got a man who did it all for me and was so polite and nice about it and even lowered my price to 29.95 per month for as long as I have it. Im happy.

Man I just called in and got the complete run around from this moron agent. She told me they talked to the sales dept. and while we were reading the press release TOGETHER I was pointing out to her that it said...

"The price for the 1.5Mbps/384Kbps consumer service remains the same as it was for the 1.5Mbps/128Kbps service -- $29.95 a month when purchased as part of a package of local and long-distance calling services or $34.95 a month for stand-alone DSL service."

She said but look at the 3rd paragraph and how it's business DSL. She kept telling me that her sales agent told her that I HAD to switch to Business DSL at the price of $59.99 to get the 384 down. What a crock. I kept pushing her and she basically told me the website was dead wrong and it was misleading. I decided I had wasted enough of my time with this ignorant person and finished the call with her.

I called back, told the new agent the same story and I was off the phone in 5 min ending with her saying that I'd have 384 in a few days.

Anyway don't let them talk you out of it, it's probably just a dumbass agent that dosen't know what she's talking about.

Hmm...if I could get 1.5/384 Verizon DSL for $35/mo I'd do it. I've got the same from Earthlink right now but for $50/mo.

:| I just called and the rep told me I am at the max speed for the area 768/128.
I don't know whether this is true, or I was unlucky to hit dumb rep.
Anyone from WA being able to upgrade?
