For those of us still unwilling to cough up $40 a month for dsl, here's a free dial-up w/o banners or ads. Worldspy is gone but @ freedsl.com you can get their winfire toolbar, and set up a DUN under windows that bypasses the toolbar requirement. In the end, pure dial-up. Now, if only they can follow up on their free DSL offer.......

Fido didn't post this for people who want free/cheap DSL, this was posted as another free (bannerless?) ISP for dial-up.

You can do bannerless dialup with any free dialup provider. You see, whenever these programs (Netzero, Altavista, freeinternet, or anything else) set themselves up on your machine, they also set up an entry in your Dialup Accounts folder. When they do that, you just need to remember two things.

1) Modem handshake negotiations are conducted in cleartext. This means that your so-called "encrypted" login and passwords are sent in cleartext to the service provider in their so-called "encrypted" form.
2) Deep down within the "Dialup Properties" of each dialup entry, there is an option you can check, called "Record a log for this connection".

Given this info, if you can't figure things out, you probably belong on MyPoopons.

Both the login entry and the password entry begin and end with a bunch of dots. Like so:

XXXXXXXXXXXXX ... my_nic
XXXXXXXXXXXXX kname ....
XXXXXXXXXXXXX ..... is_w
XXXXXXXXXXXXX iggles ...

login: my_nickname
password: is_wiggles

Each entry may extend to more than two lines. But a little common sense, a couple retries, and you can't miss it.

Unless you're a Mypoopon.

Its not smart to act like an @$$ and call everyone a MyPoopons, you might want to change your attitude... Not to mention posting ways to get around banners is a TOS on most free isps.

I use DSL, so I can't try this trick...but out of curiousity, where does it log to?

Uh oh...TOS....maybe for people who pay $20 a month for things like AOL would care about TOS violations..but for something free do ya really care? ;)

Allow me to substitute that acronym extension into what Raging BITCH just said.

"Posting ways to get around banners is a Terms Of Service on most free isps."

Makes a whole lotta sense, don't it kids? No? Ah! But that's the beauty of being a MyPoopon! You don't HAVE to make sense as long as your fellow MyPoopons appreciate your useless posts!

The truth is, Raging BITCH, there are no appreciative MyPoopons on this board waiting to hear your useless moo-ings. So maybe you better go back to your barn.

Please holster the flames boys and girls...

I along w/ many other members of Anandtech would be very appreciatve if you would shed a bit more light into the whole dial up w/o banners.

And if I may clarify what RB might have meant was: "you might want to change your attitude... not to mention posting ways to get around banners is a TOS on most free isps."

Can't we all just get along? :)

Okay, wait a sec.

You want to find my brain. (It's small.) Then you want it in your ass. Probably because it's small. (Won't hurt much?) Then you want to do something else with that microscope. (I bet it's not as small. Don't say I didn't warn you.) And on top of all this you're married to a Greek moon goddess often portrayed as a virgin huntress. (Artemis, as defined in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary)

This is getting too kinky for me.
