I'd have to say this is THE best OT posts i've read in a long while. I wish it would happen a little more often to liven up the atmosphere of Anand... Kudos to all who contributed, kudos to wiggie. (If you don't mind me calling you that. =)
 
What's going on here?

First of all the thread is titled free dial-up w/ no banner.....

So I assume everyone who is partaking in this discussion might be considering obtaining such a service. Now, the gentleman commonly referred to as Wiggles, supplied some useful information about bypassing banner advertisements with some free Isps. This information pertains to the thread and is something I as well as many others did not know.

This thread only deteriorated when a few of you began your whining. For your information there exists a thread specifically for this purpose where you can vent your moralistic shortcomings and other whinces....I belive it is called, "Brag & Moan". As far as this term TOS is concerned, well, I'm sure everyone here realises that it is against company policy or against something else........my point being we don't care. So go to "Brag and Moan" and start your TOS thread. Don't state the obvious here. What is relevant here is any subject matter which will contribute or add to this specific thread...ie any additional ways to bypass the banners or any additional bannerless services available.


Furthermore I have learnt that the term, "my Poopons" or "my Tampons" is standard terminology among every forum outside MyCoupons. So out of curiosity I ventured to see what all the commotion was about........ and its absolutely true! Its a veritable cesspool of 30-40 yr old mother of somethings... seeking free panty liners and sharing their resulting experience with the rest of that forum. Now I'm not being demeaning in any way, if that's your bag...so be it. But I prefer to be here as it is a better fit for me. Some of you might want to reconsider....Uncle Elmo, illusion those panty liners are still available...


Wiggles and anyone else with any additional info please post it on this thread...and thanks again for this advice which is particularly valuable because:

I do not have money to pay for an ISP.
I hate banners.
I care not of TOS

Hey, I am only 26!! 😉 And I do go there, and find some really good stuff. But I also love this place too, so what does that make me? :Q

And I would love to get free internet access, but I just want to know, you cannot get in any kind of trouble for shutting the banners off, can you?
 
Not to discourage banner disabling, but I know that NetZero (and possibly others) reserves the right (somewhere in all the legal-babble) to charge a pro-rated fee for any months in which the user has used their service in a manner which does not coincide with the policy. I'm too lazy to look up the specifics but you may verify this yourself if you read the legalities.

To be honest, one is better off with a truely free ISP because they do not face the possibilty of TOS or these pro-rated fees. And secondly they are not 'supporting' the userbase of those banner filled and 'click-forced' ISP's that we have an itching to moan about.

On the otherhand, there is an edge of excitement when undermining a corporation's effort to stop such activities.

Well, yes, you will get in some trouble. Namely, they might cancel your account if they find out. At which point, you use their software to make a new free account, and continue like you did before.

GirlFriday, I never said panty liners were useless. In fact my girlfriend uses them and I'm certainly glad for that!
 
k, not quite sure why this post started all this trouble...but Freedsl.com specifically says that their free dial-up has no banner. So i would doubt if that breaks their TOS. Second of all, i've learned from anandtech posts that free=hot deal. Peace!!!
 
I wouldn't touch freedsl dialup with a ten foot pole. I bet they'll sell your surfing habits to porn peddlers, catalog outlets, and anyone else who has an interest in customer profiling.

You gotta be wary of any free ISP that doesn't have a required banner somewhere within its business plan.

wiggles- who the hell cares who they sell my surfing habits to? As long as they don't sell my personal info(which i'm sure is covered in their privacy policy, but could be wrong). And does *67 really defeat their ANI?

I tried your method with AltaVista but it won't work cause Altavista makes a second DUN connection each time you start it, so you can't change the properties before you dial and it gets deleted when you hang up. However, freeinternet.com has absolutely no encryption, I thought that was pretty funny.

1) Yes it does.

2) You need to create a completely different dialup entry, and input all your info in there. This is so that all that automatic deletion and creation of new entries won't faze you one bit.

3) If you have faith in corporate privacy policies, I have this wonderful bridge in Manhattan I'd like to sell you.

I'm not sure if you understand about my Altavista problem. I can't get a log of the connection period. I tried making a separate connection under the same name, but once i open the program, it overwrites it with its own entries without logged connection.
 
ok guys, if any of you people don't want to violate the free isp's contract, that's great, i respect your decisions, but if other people decide to go the other way, it's their choice, and they'll deal with the consequences. so leave them alone, mind your own business.
 
There is no contract. The legality of clickthrough agreements has never been established, and they remain on shaky legal ground. With the recent passage of digital signature legislation, expect naive clickthrough agreements to be challenged in court and struck down in the very near future.

What does this mean for you, the consumer? It means you should feel free to ignore shrinkwrap licences and clickthrough agreements as you see fit. They are legally meaningless. They do not legally bind you to anything in any way. They are simply there because no one has gotten around to challenging them in court yet. If any company tries to enforce these things on you, ask them to produce a document which has your signature on it, documenting your agreement. That will shut them up real quick like.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but my friends tell me [link deleted] is the easiest one to remove the banners. The login and password is exactly the same as the one u signed up with. So just create a new DUN file and get the phone # and the login and password and then kabooom! You've got instant non-banner free internet access.

My 2 cents:
These internet banners are getting bigger by the minute. I remember NetZero used to take up about 1 inch off the top of my screen. It's like 2 - 3&quot; now. Plus they have extra popup windows like that NZTV thingy. Ugh.

I just noticed that frannie went back and erased her messages, do you know how annoying that is to people reading the posts, now they aren't going to make any sense. Just because your messages made you seem like a total jackass is no reason to ruin what was becoming a very tasty thread.

I think you got a wrong answer from wiggles.

*67 does NOT always defeat caller ID.

If the called party as an ISDN line, they get your ANI regardless
of what you do.

I would think that many dial up ISPs set up a T1 configured as
an ISDN PRI, so they COULD get your ANI even if you dial *67.

Mystery: I don't think that they can legally change the TOS and force you to keep the agreement under penalty of the $500. I may be wrong, but that doesn't sound legally correct.
