go to your local walmart and you can purchase a prepaid phone for under $15. Minutes, as well as plans including unlimited, can be had for very cheap as well. Hell you can even get blackberry's and android phones albeit at much higher prices for the phone.

TracFone's at CVS are $7.95 with 30 minutes. I've got a AT&T GoPhone that cost a whooping $10, included $15 of time, I can add $15-$100, it cost $3 to start the phone for 24 hours, but most calls are free during that time, and text are $0.20. You can get a phone for less than the price of a couple packs of cigarettes, anyone claiming they can't get a phone is full of shit.

This obviously means that if you are paying more than $10 for you phone service you are paying too much. Because you are bankrolling free phones. Must mean their profit is $20.00 or more on normal phones.

This is just one more program we need to cut.

What, no free MP3 Player???

"y0 dawg, dint see ne iphone der tho...me luvs me sum iphone."

Before anyone cries racist, this was almost an exact phrase I saw a white person type into their facebook from Louisiana. They wanted a free phone as well.

You do realize I'm talking ford right?

The times you speak of where an email is enough to get a job never existed. Only in the minds of the entitled does such a world exist.

When was the last time you looked for a job? Job apps are ALL done through the internet now. Do you live in a fantasy world where people send their resumes in the mail?

lol, trying to compare cell phones to the communist book store? I knew some of you were crazy, but damn...

I can't believe anyone is defending this blatant waste...

Heh. total lameness. Andrew Carnegie funded hundreds of libraries- musta been a Commie, huh?

I rather suspect that basic cell phones & service are probably cheaper than land lines at this point...

I'm pretty sure wing nuts would be happy providing poor people with free TV, if it only got one channel, Fox News...

This was ford, 1500 jobs. Applications had to be submited to labor office, in person and fill out application with this thing called a pen or pencil.

Those selected will get letters. No phone needed. If they really want a job, they can easily go get one and no phone is required. They need to use the services available like the employment office or a temp agency.

And I don't have to look for a job, they find me.

No, job applications are not ALL done through the internet now, there are still MANY places that you need to walk your happy little ass to their B&M location and use a pen to fill out a paper application. 🙄

And you think a system that Ford sets up with the UAW is typical? Yep, you live in a fantasy world.

There are jobs where you jump off of a small trampoline through a ring of fire instead of doing an interview. What is your point?

No, you live in a fantasy world. I'm not talking professional jobs like we're used to. I'm talking about jobs where you see a sign or advertisement, walk in and fill out an application and say "I want to work, can I has application please?"

I'm essentially blowing your entire argument of needing a CELL PHONE to find or get a job. There are things one "needs" to live and work, a cell phone isn't one of them. It's a luxury.

And just how often do you see those signs in your day to day life? I saw one a few months ago on a small family run restaurant in a small town and remember thinking "Wow. I haven't seen one of those for years.". They exist Primarily intheservice sector and even then the low end of the service sector.

I do see plenty of "We aren't taking resumes" signs however.

If I was in that position I would walk the entire mall, every store and fill out an application. And if they said "we're not taking application or have jobs available", I'd say "that's fine, I'll fill out one anyway in case you need somebody". I would also indicate that e-mail is the best place to reach me and I would point out that I check it at the public library daily.

There's no secret to finding a job, just prove you want to work.

Nah- you're blowing you're right wing buddies & their talking points.

Cell phones are good when seeking a job, because employers often call to notify the lucky that they've been selected. If there's no answer, they call the next guy down the list, because they have plenty of applicants...

Some of the laziest people on the planet gravitate to HR. They don't care if they hire guy #1 or guy #2 or guy #3- whoever picks up first gets the job. Then they can go back to gossiping & surfing the net... take a long lunch after having done such a great job at such an arduous task...

Yeh, that's why total unemployment, U6, stands at 16% or so... because those people don't want to work, right?

Why, there are more than enough jobs, it's just that people are too lazy to get 'em, according to Spidey, a country club kind of guy who'd starve to death on the money from the kind of mall jobs he's talking about.

Guess what? Spidey lives in a world of privilege, a world that has nothing but scorn for people less fortunate than themselves. Without that scorn, they have to admit that luck has played a part in their well being, that they're not the kind of oh-so-smart stud-muffins they like to imagine that they are. It'd be a real downer.

Nevermind that we're living in the aftermath of the greatest financial looting spree in history. Nevermind that the only things preventing a rerun of 1931 are the things govt has done to prevent that- the private sector sure as hell hasn't. And for sure, never, never mind that the calls for austerity from his heroes will make it worse, and that super low taxes at the top haven't made it one little bit better. that just gives guys like spidey more money to hoard, more leverage over an economy and a govt they want desperately to destroy.

Point remains.

On government money equals free cell phone.

You working folks getting free cell phone? Free cable? Free rent? Free food?

You know nothing of my past. I suffer no guilt or being privileged. There were many times in my early 20s/late teens when chicken necks, beans and rice were my dinner that I made as I paid 100 bucks a month to put a roof over my head which was nothing more than a room in a house with folks I didn't particularly like.

It was those times that made me what I am and my personal success. I don't ever want to go back to that time again. If I can do it, anybody can. And dam straight I'm going to hoard my money so the fucking leeches can't take it. Gold/Silver is at an all time high and I've got plenty of ammo.

It's not wise to hope for the best, without preparing for the worst. And thanks to Obama, we are in for worse and I prepared for his economy and will come out very well indeed.

You want some money? Get to fucking work and this country is the best in the world.

Its people from this thread that push me to a loss of faith in humanity. Since when did our government investment in a private corporation stifle our country and compounding the dollar into minerals not? Turn that mineral into USD and take an economics class at your local community college, then we'll talk.

You never got lucky, of course, never. It's all hard work, right? If you had to admit to being lucky at all, your whole belief system would collapse. Such is the nature of denial, and fragile egos who need to puff their chests & claim moral superiority in the process.

It wouldn't matter who was President today, Spidey, other than the fact that things would be a lot worse if it were some tea party looney, if the Bush Admin hadn't completely reversed their field to bail out the banks. Herbert Hoover was president from the great crash until 1933, followed the same kind of policy you'd recommend, and things only got worse, a lot worse.

It's not Obama's economy, no matter how badly you want to believe that it is. things were falling down, locking up in 2007, long before he was elected, and they won't be getting any better given that today's tax and fiscal policies have been created by Republicans, enforced under threats of extortion.

After the bush tax cut extension & the Republican victory in the debt ceiling extortion racket, Repubs now own the economy, even if you're the only guy in the world who believes to the contrary. And it won't get any better, because they don't want it to get better, because they won't do the things necessary to make it better. The guys at the top are doing great, and that's all they care about, other than beating Obama.

This.

My company employs 80,000 workers and is in the top 10 nationally for revenue by a non publicly traded company. At that size, we employ a wide range of workers from entry level up, in a pretty wide range of jobs. About two years ago we switched over to 100% online applications.

Being a private company there are a few things that happen slower than everyone else, so if we are doing online apps only, everyone else probably is too.

Spoken as a truly classless, and out of touch with the real world, blowhard.

My little brother was recruited straight out of high school to work as a game designer for a company that made RTS's. He was one of the top ranked players in the world back then. He graduated, quit his job at Pizza Hut and moved on. If he can do it, anybody can.

The truth of the matter is that everyone has different aptitudes and abilities. Some of them translate into well paying jobs, some don't. Some people pursue those aptitudes and abilities to their fullest extent, others become bored with things that come easily and instead focus on things that are more difficult. Other people have great potential, but life throws setbacks at them that they are unable to get past or move past.

I certainly played as much RTS's as my brother did, and I would sit in his room and watch him play to try and beat him. I never once did. Not even one game, muchless with any consistency. Not everyone can do what he does.

While social mobility in the US is better than other places, it still isn't perfect. The majority of citizens are only able to move up one social class per generation. There are exceptions, but they are rarities and not the rule.

Perhaps you are an exception, and you came from a poor family and became wealthy. But that is not the norm, even with hard work and intelligence most people cannot overcome that social class hump. Just because you did something, doesn't mean everyone else can.

You want some money? Get to fucking work and this country is the best in the world.

There are plenty of people who would be dying to work, but cannot find employment. You are absolutely clueless if you think the reason that the unemployment rate is sitting around 10% is because those people are just lazy. I mean, were people just not lazy during the Clinton years when we had record low unemployment? People just decided to become lazy these last few years?

Either you are just spewing crazy (possible) or you are again, simply out of touch with the real world (also possible).

You and Thock don't get out in the real world much do you? There's about ten businesses within five miles of my house that I have seen with "Help Wanted" signs in the windows that have paper applications. There are a lot of businesses that use online applications, mostly large chains, but there are plenty of places that still use paper applications.
