See, that's what I'm talking about. If you were never interested, why does it bother you so much that other people are?

Nah, every chapter is different. Like I said, we are one of the top in the nation. We visit surrounding chapters a couple of times a year, and I can tell you some of them are NOT exactly what we consider Pike material....

So learning leaderships skills and learning how to deal with living and working with 90+ others is bad? Why do you hate fraternities so much?

I think he's just trying to stir things up.

haha I think you might be on to something...

all you naysayers would be surprised to know that most US presidents and top ceo were in fraternities in college. many of them joined fraternal orders after college too.

so looks like we've had a bunch of alcholic idiots running ouur country for years and maybe thats why our government is a mess.

To be honest I don't really care for them... But I honestly don't care about what anyone else wants to do -- If you feel you are getting something out of it then . I am just bored today and figured I could get a rise outta some of ya... :p

I am a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha. We are one of the top chapters in the nation, winning the 'Smythe Cup' the past two years, which typically goes to the top 5-7% of chapters. We are the largest fraternity on campus(87 men), we put in more community service hours than the rest of the greek system combined(4000 hours), donated more money than anyone else($12,000 in charity donations), and have the highest GPA among all fraternities(3.15 cum). Sure, we also throw some pretty damn good parties, too.

The fraternity system is what you make of it. There are fraternities that fit the stereotype of loudmouthed assholes that do nothing but drink, there are fraternities that aren't. The trick is to find a fraternity that fits the individual, as they are all different.

The common sentiment of "I don't need to pay for my friends" is, however, complete BS. I joined my fraternity late in my sophomore year. I already had a solid group of friends and a very active social life. I did not need any fraternity to make friends. Did I make a lot of new friends? Sure, I can't deny that. Did I pay for those friends? A resounding NO! Next week, I will be going to the annual Pike beach house for nine days. Housing/food will be completely paid for by the fraternity. The fraternity often pays for or subsidizes trips to sporting events, or 'fun' educational events like tours of breweries. We have two formals every year at a substantially reduced cost, and they are amazing. What it comes down to, is financially, you get what you are willing to get. If you're an active brother, you WILL get back the money you put in, plain and simple.

Another thing about getting your money back. Here it costs ~$450 a semester in dues for my fraternity(Phi Kappa Tau). To live in the house, it's $2700/semester, which includes 3 meals a day, Monday-Fri. So that's $3150/semester, which is about $850 cheaper than the cheapest dorms on campus (not even apartments).

You're saving $1700 a year joining a fraternity, right off the bat. Not to mention all the events it pays for (BBQs, tailgating, parties, formal, etc).

Yes, I did happen to see that comment and that's one of the reasons I put in the part where some of the guys I meet from other chapters make me feel ashamed of being a Pike. All chapters are different from each other. I'm sure not all SAE chapters are filled with date rapists and I'm sure not all TKE chapters make their pledges do dishes naked.

the SAE brothers at my school were top o the top fvcknuts as well

The SAE brothers at Maryland were real tools. After numerous rapes and someone dying on the front steps of the house (due to a drug overdose), they were finally kicked off campus.

Okay, maybe I was wrong about not all SAEs being bad. ;)

the one thing i never quite understood is the whole hazing process. i'm not talking silly harmless hazing, but the serious drink until you puke/vomit/passout type hazing.

while there are plenty of cool people in frats, i've come across quite a few idiots who's every sentence seems to start, "i was so wasted man....".

SAEs are the mortal enemies of every fraternity on every campus. they
are usually the living stereotype of the testosterone driven blonde haired a-holes we all love to hate in the movies.

I don't understand hazing, either. I have friends from back home that are in fraternities that haze, and they tell me there are benifits, that it promotes unity in the pledge class, etc, I think its all BS. I know we don't haze, seeing as I'm the Pledge Educator I should know, I suspect some of the others on campus do, but they certainly wouldn't tell us about it, because that could land them in trouble. At any rate, hazing is stupid, pledging should be used to teach them what its like to be a brother & how to be a productive member, not to make them prove they want/deserve it.

Wasn't bush in Skull & Bones? He went to Yale for undergrad, Harvard for grad school. I thought it was for seniors.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever understand how having all the pledges do dishes naked or tying up one of the pledges and parading them around the greek system promotes unity. To me, that is just fvcked up. A lot of the people that sign those type of houses realize what they are getting into and that is one of the reasons they join. Sure, it wouldn't be hard at all to report them but it's always going to be there because there will always be people like that that want to be in a house. Also, if we do report hazing there is a high probability that the house we reported would try to get us screwed for hazing considering the definition for it by our university is extremely vague.

It sucks but that's how it is, I guess.

Some frats here just are drinking frats and pretty much suck. I like one frat for sure though and thats Alpha Gamma Rho which is the farmers frat. I fix computers for them all the time and they pretty much all treat me great. I get free food and I am always paid well for my time with cash.
