not the honor frats like HKN where EECS nerds are in, etc.... right?

How exactly are those co-ed pre-med or pre-law or whatever honor frats... still hazing and what not? I'm more familiar with the regular frats that claim "brotherhood" and what not.

no you get in based on grades/GPA alone, its not actually like a real frat, its like APO (alpha phi omega) the coed service frat, they do community service and such, they dont pledge or what not they just join

Yea, I know like HKN here needs like 3.75 GPA or above, which is still a decent list of people. I thought they would sitll make them pledge and crap.. hah. Like make the EECS guys write their own OS for initiation.. ok no that's lame.

you're stupid

Good job on attacking the person and not the arguement.

you need to work on your irony detector.

Well, that could explain it.

We (APhiO) had a pledge period.

Well I guess I'll tell my experience of the past two years in a fraternity.

I did not join to 'buy' friends. I can do that perfectly fine on my own. In my experience in the fraternity, just because you are in the house does not mean everyone will like you. I also did not join to haze underclassmen. I think hazing is bloody stupid and there are quite a few houses at UW that don't haze. Everyone in my house puts in work to make the house clean and do philanthropy. I joined because it seemed like a lot of fun and that's what it has been. The last two years of my life have been a blast. I'm not sure if I would have gotten the same experience in the dorms.

I realize, however, that not all fraternities stray from the stereotype. Hell, not even all chapters of a fraternity are even close to the same. I've met a lot of guys from other chapters of Pikes that make me ashamed that I'm in the same fraternity as them. Those guys are generally from party colleges though so I guess I shouldn't expect too much.

I personally think that for most of the larger colleges (>20k people) there is pretty much a fraternity for every different type of person. Not all fraternities out there rufi girls and black out all of the time.

Oh snap! You're a pike? Haha did you see what I said earlier about pikes and rufi coladas? I dunno, I don't think the pikes on our campus here are the best. I'm at Ferris State in Michigan fwiw

edit: seriously, the pikes here basically are known as the top of the top assholes as far as frats go, but I know that it's different everywhere

I didn't read the majority of the responses, so much of what I have to say may have already been said.

I am a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha. We are one of the top chapters in the nation, winning the 'Smythe Cup' the past two years, which typically goes to the top 5-7% of chapters. We are the largest fraternity on campus(87 men), we put in more community service hours than the rest of the greek system combined(4000 hours), donated more money than anyone else($12,000 in charity donations), and have the highest GPA among all fraternities(3.15 cum). Sure, we also throw some pretty damn good parties, too.

The fraternity system is what you make of it. There are fraternities that fit the stereotype of loudmouthed assholes that do nothing but drink, there are fraternities that aren't. The trick is to find a fraternity that fits the individual, as they are all different.

The common sentiment of "I don't need to pay for my friends" is, however, complete BS. I joined my fraternity late in my sophomore year. I already had a solid group of friends and a very active social life. I did not need any fraternity to make friends. Did I make a lot of new friends? Sure, I can't deny that. Did I pay for those friends? A resounding NO! Next week, I will be going to the annual Pike beach house for nine days. Housing/food will be completely paid for by the fraternity. The fraternity often pays for or subsidizes trips to sporting events, or 'fun' educational events like tours of breweries. We have two formals every year at a substantially reduced cost, and they are amazing. What it comes down to, is financially, you get what you are willing to get. If you're an active brother, you WILL get back the money you put in, plain and simple.

Yes, I did happen to see that comment and that's one of the reasons I put in the part where some of the guys I meet from other chapters make me feel ashamed of being a Pike. All chapters are different from each other. I'm sure not all SAE chapters are filled with date rapists and I'm sure not all TKE chapters make their pledges do dishes naked.

He (the other pike) started the thread. How many chapters do the pikes have? If it's a relatively low number maybe you can back me up that the chapter at my school is one of your lesser performers, although maybe you can't publically acknowledge it.

You see? There are lots of douche bags outside of fraternities as well. That post is evidence of it.

Just because you've had bad experiences with fraternities doesn't mean that all are the same and all are sh!t. But I guess everyone is entitled to their narrow-minded opinions.

Nothing against your chapter but, I knew girls that wouldn't go near the Pike house here at Auburn.

Well I haven't seen the history of frats on the history channel, but I could speculate that they started out as something nice, and over time got twisted a bit by a few. Today it's like animal house only not as innocent, with 10 times the alcohol and pink shirts.

So learning leaderships skills and learning how to deal with living and working with 90+ others is bad? Why do you hate fraternities so much?

I wouldn't really say it's like animal house unless you are at a party school. There are several people in my house that have never touched a drop of alcohol in their life. The pink shirts is kind of true though. I think the best example is when one guy in our house was wearing a polo shirt with the collar popped and a pink polo over that with the collar popped. Of course we had to make fun of him b/c that's stupid. I don't think I'll ever understand the metro look.

Are you really that stupid, or are you just trying to spark an argument?

How am I living and dying by Pike? Of my roommates, only one of them is also a Pike, and I've known him since he lived across the hall from me freshman year, I knew him before either of us were Pikes. Just because I come in a thread and post positive things about us and what we've done, that doesn't mean its all I do. The ignorance is strong in you, isn't it?

Or maybe he was the victim of a rufi colada in one of the undesirable chapters.

So voice your opinions on fraternities and/or share stories.

Matters on the school. If you go to the University of Dayton, the parties outside of frats are better.

Where I went ot school (Clarkson), frats are a good idea.

And overall, tehy are just college kids. But htey do things for the school and community. Work hard, play hard....

And it's a cross section. So you will have your nerds frat and your animal house frat, etc ....
