I was reading through the Sigma Phi Omega girls thread a bit ago and I started to wonder what the general concenus is on fraternities. I hear quite a bit of criticism about the Greek system so I was kind of wondering if it was widespread or just a few people that believe the stereotypes portrayed in movies.

So voice your opinions on fraternities and/or share stories.

The stereotypes are real and frat guys themselves promote it. If you're in college to have fun and ruin your liver and STD-free status, a frat just may be for you. If you want to go on to grad school or generally care about grades, they might not be.

On ATOT you're just going to get a lot of negatively skewed responses. The average ATOTer is decidedly NOT fraternity material.

atot response:

they are fvcking popped collar douschebags who have to buy friends and like to gangbang chicks and take advantage of chicks.

my response: depends upon the frat, a lot of frats fit the stereo type, others are great for networking into career paths and have geniune help towards an academic goal.

in summary: it depends

i dont like it. all the frat guys i know think they are so tough and so wild and so badass. i also dont like how they think that buying friends is the cool thing to do. i also dont like the guys who think they are cooler just because they are in a frat.

i just dont like frats in general. i dont hate the people in them, i just think they are stupid. i have quite a few friends who were in them as well. and all that hazing crap is so stupid as well.

At my university, most of the frat are good and don't fit the stereotype. The rest (about 1/4) are the ones that created stereotype :disgust:

The purpose of a fraternity is not to party, meet people or have job connections after you graduate.

The purpose of a fraternity is to be able to haze pledges for three years after you make it in and to have free janitorial services for the next three years.

When I mean haze, I dont mean the typical hazing. I mean doing stuff like making them do incredibly silly things that make you laugh or make them do hard physical labor like scrub and then wax the floors of a 4 story frat house.

I've lived in one all summer and it is great. People who don't know what they're talking about will say you're paying for friends, but here it costs just about the same as the dorms except you don't have a parental figure (RA) and the events are organized by the students themselves. For someone who enjoys beer I couldn't live with some burnout writing me up for a few empty cans in my room. And at a fraternity you get your own room for the majority of the 4 years, unless you choose to share one of the bigger rooms.

It's basically like living in a mansion with a bunch of your friends, with mansions full of hot girls all around you.

I will add that it depends on the frat. . . if you see a guys in pink polos walking out of the front door then I can't speak for them and they're likely douchebags

Ya, I figured that situation exists somewhere. At my school it's about 95/5 the other way, and the "good" 5% isn't that great. We have a pharmacy school here (which I'm in) and a couple of pharmacy frats which basically make up the relatively good portion. Maybe 2 guys from the pharmacy frat get in each year out of 150 slots, and 1 of the 2 who got in with my class basically failed the first year and has to repeat it.

that is TOTALLY dependent on the school you go to, and very few are actually like that

I'm in my 6th year of college and I can honestly say, the girls you regularly see at frat parties, while attractive, are very undesirable overall. But ya if you're looking for an easy hot score it's mecca.

Depends on the person and the fraternity. Asking this question on ATOT will definately skew your results. ATOT is one of the most closed-minded and judgemental groups I have ever seen.

And what, pray tell, is the point of that? Seems pretty silly to me. I wouldn't even want to haze someone...it's childish and not helpful in the least. And why go through hazing? For some silly frat status symbol that doesn't even matter for anything?

Anyway. I view party frats as scummy. They take advantage of girls, spread STDs, do stupid things....Darwin needs to pay them a visit :)

You must goto a small college. Its not uncommon to goto a frat party and see 200 people and every party has different people you see.

I wonder how many of those who dislike frats have actually ever been inside of one or tried rushing. It's easy to sit in your dorm and get pushed along through college but remember that the people in fraternities made an effort to walk into a house full of strangers and make new friends. If you want to criticize them for paying for friends, take a look at yourself and how you moved into your dorm and only met the people on your floor because they were near.
