Seems there is a string caught around his tongue and it goes down into his intestines. Sedated right now and they are hoping to cut the string off and pull out as much as they can letting the rest pass through naturally. Otherwise the only option is surgery... which is NOT happening. Already $300+ into it at this point. If it doesn't pass itself, then I'll have to have him put down.

My kids (7 and 9) are going to be devastated. This blows.

This happened to cat of mine actually. I was 6 at the time. I wondered if I pulled on the string coming out his ass if his tongue would go down his throat. Seriously though, I hope your cat makes it

That would be ideal actually.

String has been cut. Vet unable to pull any out (not good) Intestines are compacted (or whatever they call it). Wife has to go pick him up now, and we have to pray that it passes naturally. If he continues to vomit, doesn't eat/drink, and is miserable, he has to go back in tomorrow and we will surrender him (Vet will take him and perform surgery and place him with a new family).

$1000+ for the surgery. It's a hard pill to swallow.
 
Better he be surrendered than euthanized, though. He could live many more happy, healthy years, and I'm sure your family would prefer that to euthanasia. But with any luck, it will pass on its own.

Right. We understand and totally agree with that.
I'm not confident in it passing (I tend to be a half-empty guy), but it is what it is.

It will be a long 24 hours I'm sure... especially with the kids. Ugh.

So, you surrender the animal. Then what? Who is paying for the surgery then?
 
Damn, my wife just warned me the other day to not leave my floss laying around because it could kill the cats. I was skeptical, I guess now I'm not.

I thought of that before posting the OP to be honest (not specifically Alky's but just the ATOT mentality). But then I realize nobody would be a big enough asshole to do that... would they?
 
waffleironhead, I worked at a vet's office briefly. The way it worked there was the owner surrendered the animal, and the vet covered the cost to fix it. Then they adopted it to either a new family or kept it as an office pet. I saw many more euthanasia's than I ever wanted to see. 🙁
 
Well, wife just called.
As soon as he got out of his crate at home he ran to the food dish!
good sign, but lets see if he pukes it up or ???

Yeah, I've spent quite a bit on trying to save my animals. $500+ on a cat who pulled thru and $2500 on one who didnt make it. Its a hard decision to make, and I'm not going to judge people one way or another on it.

Hoping for the best for kitty.

Nor will I. We have spent thousands on our various dogs and cats over the years and I have never regretted a cent of it. The only thing that pisses me off is people that presume to tell me what I should be spending that money on instead of our pets. Hoping for the best for the kitty as well.
 
Good luck to your cat! He's eating, so that's a good sign. Maybe he'll work up a nice big turd to get that string out 🙂
