Who said $300 is their limit? Not I. I said I didn't have $1000 minimum to spend on a surgery and was willing to give the cat up if that is what it came down to so his life was spared.

The Vet said that he would need surgery to live, and that if I could not afford it, I could surrender the cat and the surgery would be done to save him. This is something my wife and I, and even my 7yr old daughter understood... everyone except you apparently.

Hardly being a DICK...it also doesn't make you any more right because others agree and want to give you a "good ol' chap" pat on the back. $1000 is not a lot of money in the care of a pet. When people discuss fortunes being spent to save an animal they are usually talking about $5k+, definitely not just $1000.

People think shelther prices for spay/neuters are typical. At most normal veternarians a spay is not a really cheap process.

That said most people here I have doubts on being even able to afford to take care of themselves yet alone another living creature.

Most think a cat belongs outside and the kittens created will just work themselves out.

edit: as a side note many balk at spending $100, 200, 500+ on a pet yet always seem to have game console, full-boat cable/satellite service and regularly go out to see movies.

A quick review shows you plan to see Conan when it comes out and with a family of 4 that's usually about a $50-100 2 hours. Then you mention not only the Wii but also having a 360 and all the games to go along with it. Yet cannot afford $1000 for the pet, sounds like more you not wanting to pay $1000 for the pet rather than being broke?

Well he didn't know anything had happened until he saw a piece of shiny stuff hanging out of his cats butt. He's an old school guy....the kind who solves his own problems. So when the cat sat down next to him he put his foot on the string and scared the cat. When the cat jumped up, the problem was solved.

There always seems to be one or two in a crowd that has a story like this.

However, with string and rope unless very short lengths pulling it out especially extremely fast is the worst thing you can do.

The digestive tract and intestines more importantly are not smooth nor straight paths. The danger (and it's very common) is for the string to wrap and knot around a bit or two on it's way through. This then can cause a blockage and if tugged can cut through the organ easily.

Having your 'guts' leak into the body cavity is serious in itself, having a hole in them equally so.

The only safe methods are surgery or if it passes on it's own.

The Wii and 360 were bought when I was making a VERY lucrative salary. About a 2 years ago I was LAID OFF and was unemployed for ~year. I have PILES of bills to currently catch up on and climb out from. PILES.

As for the movie... yeah I will go see it. I have a nephew that works at a movie theater and gives us many free passes. Not to mention, if you were doing your research, you'd put two and two together and realize I am NOT going to take a 7 year old girl and a 9 year old boy to see Conan... so even then you $100 estimate is jacked up.

Do not judge me and my decisions that I make for my family. If I had the thousand dollars readily accessible do you HONESTLY think I would not have spent it on the cat?

Don't even fucking attempt to pass judgment on me when you don't even know me or my situation. My wife and kids cried for 24hrs over this. If you think I was simply being cheap and didn't want to spend the money on the cat you're fucking stupid.

Not to mention I never, EVER went against what the doctor prescribed for the cat. She recommended the sedation to cut the string out from around the tongue and to attempt to pull as much of it out as possible. We did that. Since the string was still in there, and the intestines compacted, she recommended that we could A) do the surgery right there and then, or B) take him home for 24hrs and see if it passed naturally, and if not, then bring him back and have the surgery (at which point we'd have to either choose to pay for the surgery, or surrender him so he could have the surgery). Please tell me where I did not do what the Vet suggested... or are you too busy attempting to pass judgment again?

seems 100% A-OK now. He slept in bed with us last night (which is odd as he's normally in the kid's room). Been eating like a horse like he normally does. Crapping on schedule. Playing etc.

I doubt a quick sell of his xbox and games would generate even close to $1000, maybe $200-250. Plus, then you're, in effect, punishing your kids for being laid off. We're not talking sports cars or massive hobbies. Selling your xbox isn't going to retire your debts. Of course, it'd be stupid to continue to buy $60 games for it, but there's no indication that was happening.

While not being exactly clear, he did specifically mention the next 24 hours in the first few posts. I don't think we can be hard on him for being a little unclear considering the amount of stress he was under at the time.

You're trying to paint the picture of an irresponsible pet owner that falls in line with your biases...and then you criticize him for suggestion he's continuing a bias towards vets. Plus, he was really quite even handed when it came to feelings about the vet and in fact, he said how awesome and concerned they were. I see no clear evidence that he was suggesting they were trying to make a quick buck off of him.

Face it. You tried to fit him into a stereotype, and it failed. In the process of doing that you insulted his character, spending habits, and his sincerity towards being a responsible pet owner. Your personal attack completely merited the response he gave you.

Yeap. He slept in bed with me all last night (which is a bit different admittedly). And he woke me up at 4:30 this morning (which, sadly, is par for the course).

Balding can have any number of causes, fleas, a fungal/skin infection, over grooming/rubbing etc. Do the spots seem to bother him at all? Any redness, flakes, anything unusual?

Nope he doesn't mind them at all.
We took him in 6 months ago when they became persistant and the Vet chauled it up to "over grooming". Honestly though, I mean he grooms himself like any normal cat would... never "over grooms" unless he's doing it when we are not around or at night or something (maybe loneliness?) They checked for fleas, infection, rash etc... nothing. They are in the exact same spots on both hips. So it does seem as if it may be grooming...???

Not to drag the whole grocery store vs. Science Diet vs. natural food debate in, but sometimes a gradual change to a different food may help that. Back when Iams was generally thought of as a good pet food (this was in the 90's), we switched our cat from Fancy Feast to Iams and a thin patch of fur on his back filled back in. His coat became a lot nicer in general.

Not to drag the whole grocery store vs. Science Diet vs. natural food debate in, but sometimes a gradual change to a different food may help that. Back when Iams was generally thought of as a good pet food (this was in the 90's), we switched our cat from Fancy Feast to Iams and a thin patch of fur on his back filled back in. His coat became a lot nicer in general.

We've thought of that and have done Iams, Science diet and a dozen other brands. 🙁
